Apesar de geralmente preferir as minhas histórias com uma boa dose de fantasia e magia, decidi ver este anime japonês, Bakuman, que é mais um 'drama adolescente da vida real' do que outra coisa.

Baseado no manga com o mesmo nome, Bakuman conta a história de dois jovens de 14 anos, Moritaka Mashiro e Akito Takagi que decidem juntar-se para criar um manga (yep é uma história sobre mangakas) e acompanha estes dois personagens à medida que eles avançam no caminho para o seu sonho. Desde o primeiro esboço e das primeiras submissões para revistas da especialidade até aos 'one-shots' publicados, sofremos com Mashiro e Takagi enquanto eles se esforçam para aperfeiçoar o seu trabalho e conciliar o seu sonho com as aulas, pais relutantes e primeiros amores.

Esta primeira temporada foca-se nos primeiros dois anos de carreira desta dupla de autores.

Devo dizer que, a principio, pensei desistir da série. O começo é bastante lento e são precisos cinco episódios para estabelecer a relação entre o Mashiro e o Takagi. A partir daí o enredo 'descola' por assim dizer e somos atirados para o mundo dos escritores de manga profissional. Pondo de parte o facto dos protagonistas terem 14 anos (porque afinal isto é shonen e o alvo da série são rapazes desta idade), gostei bastante da história e do seu foco no mundo do manga, das editoras no Japão e nas técnicas utilizadas para desenhar (que são bastante artesanais, estranhamente). Aprendi imenso sobre o processo de selecção das séries para revistas de grande monta como a Shonen Jump, mas penso que a série falhou ao não focar a importância do mercado internacional (nomeadamente dos Estados Unidos), uma vez que a manga é o 'produto símbolo' do Japão. Mas, como já disse, esta é uma série para adolescentes e adolescentes japoneses, que provavelmente sonham todos ser mangakas, mas não querem saber do mercado internacional para nada.

No geral esta série está muito bem conseguida, desde a animação, cujo estilo de design das personagens me pareceu querer imitar ligeiramente o utilizado nos anos 70 ou 80, até à história que se desenvolveu a bom ritmo (depois do começo lento) e tem de tudo um pouco: drama, comédia, romance, uma rapariga peituda (que é o símbolo da manga shonen), personagens algo estranhas e cenas de acção (sim, leram bem, através dos mangas desenhados temos a sorte de ter acção e magia no enredo). Em suma Bakuman é multifacetado e certamente irá agradar à maioria dos fans de animação japonesa. É claro que seria de esperar que sim, uma vez que os autores do manga são já conhecidos nestas andanças... são os criadores do famoso manga (e depois anime) Death Note.

Recomendado para os amantes de tudo o que é japonês. Afinal é um anime sobre manga; que mais se pode querer?

Ora, em Dezembro não houve Guilty Pleasures aqui no blogue, mas já estamos em Janeiro, é um ano novo e chegou a altura de vos apresentar outro dos meus vícios mais ou menos secretos: manga.

Manga é banda desenhada japonesa. Geralmente é um produto direccionado ou para homens (shonen) ou para mulheres (shojo), mas devo confessar que algumas das minhas mangas preferidas (ou será 'dos meus mangas'? hmmm...) são shonen. Aqui estão alguns dos meus títulos favoritos. ^_^

This one should have a Goodreads shelf all to itself named "what urban fantasy should be but often isn't". No, really. I enjoyed this book a lot; it wasn't outstanding in terms of plot, world or characters (it's still only the first book, though), but overall it was pretty good on all three aspects.

Kara Gillian is a detective... and a summoner. She calls on beings from a different realms and works spells with arcane magic.

She lives a moderately normal life (for a summoner, that is) until she transfers to the violent crimes unit. A serial killer is on the loose and it looks like he knows some magic too.

This first book in the Kara Gillian series was pretty enjoyable. The author balanced mystery, paranormal elements and some romance pretty well and in the end she had an engrossing read. I was never bored. Of course there was this one character that annoyed me a bit, but overall it was good.

What was good:

- the nice mystery plot: it was much more developed than mystery plots usually are in these kinds of books and it wasn't just about the 'paranormal angle'. It was refreshing.

- good pacing: I repeat, I was never bored.

- the heroine that wasn't tough but also wasn't a whiner: she was actually quite likable.

- the mysterious paranormal hot guy who wasn't totally annoying: I adored Rhyzkahl's 'otherness'. He was a bit typical of paranormal male leads, sure, but also cool. Just... cool.

- the hot, sexy scenes that didn't take over the entire story (read: nice balance, romance didn't turn this into a paranormal romance parading as urban fantasy). Enough said.

- an interesting world (still not well developed, but as I said: first book).

What wasn't so good:

- the somewhat annoying male that will be part of a love triangle (BUT he wasn't too bad, which is good): the FBI agent was not needed really. :P

- the cookie-cuter villain: the bad guy was so boringly evil. Mwahahah evil.

- the heroine's aunt was annoying: a bit too out-there and very stereotypical of the ditzy character. I didn't like her much.

Overall: thumbs-up! xD

This one was another impulse buy of sorts. Vampires in a fantasy (not urban) setting intrigued me enough to want to read this.

I think I kind of misunderstood, because this is not classic fantasy; it's urban fantasy. In a way it's not even urban fantasy; it's paranormal romance.

Near future. There is a world hidden from humans by several covenants made hundreds of years ago by powerful forces. These magical contracts protects humans and 'othernaturals' alike making sure vampires, shape shifters and fae remain hidden from the general population. Vampires live in hidden cities and feed on willing humans and comarré - a race specifically bred to provide vampires with pure, powerful blood.

Chrysabelle is a comarré, one of the most expensive of her kind. When her vampire patron is killed she is forced to flee the hidden city and hide in Paradise City (USA, New Florida) because everyone thinks her guilty of murder. Plus she seems to have acquired a vampire relic (ring) by pure mistake. So she has to run and predictably ends up with a cursed vampire, a ghost that is not really a ghost and yet another cursed shape shifter.

Blood Rights' strong point is the world building. Even if it's not fantasy after all, I liked the idea of comarré, the origins of the othernaturals and the covenants. On the other hand, I didn't like the characters or the story that much.

The story because it was simplistic. The author uses very common plot devices like the kidnapping of a loved one and the reckless rescue. She did take the time to develop other storylines that will probably be important latter, but the main story of this book... was not very interesting. Painter was more interested in describing all the attraction between the two main characters.

Now, for the characters. They weren't horrible, they were just... not interesting (again). Mal was suitably tortured and Chrysabelle was suitably defiant; and most of the time they only thought of how attracted they were to each other. These two protagonists were wrong for this story somehow... they are definitely paranormal romance characters and it felt weird to have them in a book that is not so much character as plot driven (or it should have been, if the world building is any indication). Also, I didn't really connect to them, didn't care much for any of the characters since they were so stereotypical and sometimes even a bit annoying. Fi and Doc, the sidekicks are barely worth mentioning because they were very one-dimensional.

So, overall, Blood Rights has great world-building and a good enough concept but the story and the characters were so average they kind of ruined the book. I find that I'm not very interested in the rest of the story since I couldn't really connect with the characters. A standard urban fantasy book, nothing special.

BOOKS 4 & 5: Saint City Sinners & To Hell and Back

These books are part one and two of the "epic" (not so much) conclusion of the Dante Valentine series. In book 3, Lucifer decided to randomly appoint Dante as his 'right-hand' (read: assassin and/or catcher of rebellious demons), the post held before by Dante's Fallen (read: boyfriend) Japhrimel. At the same time Gabe, Dante's Necromance friend calls her with a request to return to Saint City and help her with an investigation. Chaos (and I mean it, it's plot! chaos) ensues.

The pacing of both books is frenetic and because book 5 is a direct continuation I decided to review them both. They are too similar in plot style and character development, really.

A lot goes on in these books, but mostly it's in Dante's head. She pulls an "Anita Blake" on the readers and spends most of these last two books deciding if she can or can't trust Japhrimel, who is (still) a bastard. So it's kind of a valid question, but Dante is pretty weak willed and it's annoying. Japhrimel with his "trust me and don't ask questions, just do as I say" speech is also annoying; I mean he could have learned, right? His 'beloved' is always telling him that way won't work with her.

Since all this emotional angst is unresolved, much of the books is a collection of Dante's anguished inner ramblings. And then something really bad happens to our heroine and she's left near madness (really everything happens to Dante. Too much!). So we get to read what's happening through her fractured mind. And maybe that's why the plot seemed so thin, convoluted and really random sometimes. Everyone's plotting and there are plots within plots or so the author would have us believe but in the end it's all very simple: there's a rebellion and since Dante is the 'right-hand' she's being used by everyone. And everyone gets this but her (of course if she did get it, the book would be a lot shorter). It's kind of... annoying?

Overall, I thought the author was just giving us the same old storylines she gave us in books one and two; there was nothing innovative in the last three books and the main characters were pretty aggravating with their attitudes. The plot was thin although the writing was meant to make the reader think it was complex.
Saintcrow did create a passably original and engrossing world and you can tell she had the history of it all figured out, but she only explored a tiny part of it. I'd love to read more about the world although maybe not through Dante. It's a pity the author focused so much on one race of supernaturals when there were so many others to know about. And we never got to understand more about Jado or Abracadabra or the gods.
A nice futuristic urban fantasy series that could have been so much better. The world-building is good but while the main character starts out ok, she turns into an exasperating whiner who can do little by herself.

BOOK 1: Working for the Devil

I was pleasantly surprised by this first book in the Dante Valentine series. I bought this five book omnibus because the price was good and the series was completed. I really thought it would be a standard urban fantasy, and in many aspects it is. But... the setting is slightly different, as it's the future and there are plasguns and holo-vids. The world-building reminded me a lot of the "Downside Ghosts" series by Stacia Kane (or maybe it's the other way around since the Dante Valentine series is older?) which is a plus, of course, since I love Downside Ghosts. I was also surprised that I liked Dante so much since I was convinced she would be a very stereotypical character... again, in a few ways she is, but there is also something appealing in her.

Overall, I liked this first book. It was a good introduction to the series and the characters and world-building make it interesting enough. Sure, the world needs more explaining but there are four more books.

Book 2: Dead Man Rising

WARNING: SPOILERS for book 1

In this second book of the Dante Valentine series we are treated to more development of the world although many parts aren't very well explained still. Dante is now a little more than human after what happened to her in the first book and she is dealing with Japhrimel's death by throwing herself into work. But when her friend Gabe asks for her help in an awful murder investigation Dante may just have to revisit her past.

This book was less impressive than the first. It was useful because we got to know more about the world and more about Dante's past but the mystery was pretty simple and there wasn't a lot of suspense. I think the whole thing with Japhrimel was pretty obvious too. This book is clearly meant to develop the characters and little more. That said I didn't particularly like where Dante is going as a character, but oh well. I'd also like to know more about Anubis and the other gods.

Overall a nice UF read but nothing special.

Book 3: The Devil's Right Hand

WARNING: Spoilers and Rant ahead

Really? With a fully developed world filled with supernaturals and psionic humans and still so much to discover we're back to 'Hell's denizens'? Really?

Book 3 sounded a lot like book 1, except there is no resolution, there's less action, the mystery plot is almost nonexistent, Japhrimel is an idiot and Dante is an even bigger idiot (and a whiner). Oh there are explosions and stuff, but there's not much development in terms of story (seems like the last three books are the same big story arc) and there were tons of things that could have been explored but weren't. All Dante does in this book is to whine, cry and feel cheated because her boyfriend is abusive but she luuurves him so! But she is independent! But she also luuurves him so! Woes, the hurt. It hurts.

In the middle of all the angst (Japhrimel really is a bastard in this book, to give Dante some credit), there is some story about the Prince of Hell wreaking havoc in everyone's life. What annoyed me is that Dante doesn't evolve as a character. In most urban fantasy books heroines either develop the skills to fight stronger foes or try against all odds; not Dante. She just goes on and on about how demons are stronger and she could never ever hope to fight them and she's so lucky Japh is so big and strong and can protect her.

Basically the characters in this book were mostly awfully annoying and boring. Dante alternates between damsel in distress and though 'I-don't-need-no-man' chick and Japhrimel's possessiveness towards his 'woman' and general treatment of her was frankly revolting. So it's getting difficult to like Dante, Japhrimel outlived his usefulness and nothing much happens.

We get it, demons are strong. What about writing about the other supernaturals in your world Ms Saintcrow? Diversity makes a UF series thrive, me thinks. I don't think it's going to happen since the series is finished, but it's still a pity. There is much that could be done with this series world which still is the series' best feature.

O meu objectivo primário este ano era pura e simplesmente não comprar livros nenhuns, mas já vi que esse objectivo é completamente irrealista, pelo que decidi que fazia mais sentido limitar o número de livros que posso adquirir... e são... 12. Um por mês (a ver quanto tempo consigo aguentar). Se tudo correr bem (ahah, deve ser) as mailboxes este ano vão ser escassas. Mas tenho ainda algumas mailboxes para apresentar, nomeadamente aquelas que se referem a livros comprados no ano passado. Luckily, Gin Blanco always gets her man . . . dead or alive."

First read of 2012, kind of. I started this book with plenty of time to finish it in 2011 but I kind of 'dropped it' once or twice. It's not that the book was very bad, I simply thought it was "more of the same" as it was so similar, plot wise, to the first one. Plus it kind of annoyed me that the world-building is still so incipient as if the author thought it was not important to develop it after telling us that Gin's world is basically an alternate version of our own with vampires, elementals, dwarves and giants roaming the cities of the US of A. You can't start like that and just get on with the program as if the fact that at least four different 'species' co-exist with humans. That was why I was going to give this one 2 stars; but the final chapters did provide a little more development of the magic system/ world in the series so...

I still can't feel a connection to the main character. I feel like Estep is trying to make the reader approve of Gin Blanco's flawed logic (she's an assassin) especially by making Caine (who opposes her set of morals) to be kind of a dumb character who can't explain his ideals. I actually understood Caine better than Gin, the protagonist and I recognized more depth in his character than in hers (which I'm pretty sure wasn't what the author was aiming at). I'd have liked the character more if she recognized that killing is wrong but she does it anyway... owning up to who she really is. But no. Gin makes excuses as to why she has to kill certain people and I think that just isn't believable, since the author wants her to be moral at the same time. It doesn't work, or at least for me it doesn't.

It's pretty hard to read a series if you don't really like the main character but I'm glad Caine is out of the picture... I never did understand the attraction between characters.

Estep still has her little habit of repeating herself by describing features and objects or features already described in the first book or even in this book (like Gin's grey eyes, Caine's golden eyes, the silverstone knives,etc). The name thing also continues to happen in this book and it annoyed me to no end... everyone is almost always treated by their first and last names. Caine is Donovan Caine; Fletcher is Fletcher Lane; Mab is Mab Monroe, almost every time. It's pretty tiring, as if the author doesn't know whether her character should think of someone by their first or last name... :P

Overall: the series still doesn't stand out in the urban fantasy world. The world building is weak as lots of things are left unexplained and the magic has a very minor role in the books so far, which I kind of think is pretty weird since there is magic. Many times I felt like I was reading an ordinary mystery book since Gin doesn't like to use her 'elemental' powers and giants, dwarves and vampires are very similar to humans.

I've read this book when it first came out and reviewed it on Goodreads before I started posting english reviews here, so...

Imagine an alternate world where magic is real and you can use it at your leisure... if you pay the price, of course. Magic is a wild resource and it's as bad for you as alcohol and drugs. But the rewards are worth it; or at least some people think so.

Allie Beckstrom is the heir to the company that came up with the technology to harvest and use magic. But, tired of her manipulative father she ran away from home and is now a Hound; a sort of private eye that literally tracks (with smell and other magic-enhanced senses) people who use magic wrongly.

One day she discovers her father had made wrong use of magic; shortly after confronting him, Mr Beckstrom turns up dead. Now Allie is the prime suspect.

I bought this book mainly because it seemed original (by the summary in the back cover) in the urban fantasy genre. I was actually intrigued by the idea of magic as a commodity in the modern world; something you could harvest and sell. Something that used you as you used it.

Maybe I had too many expectations, because I was sorely disappointed by this book. While the world building was solid and interesting, the story was all over the place; it was sometimes, confusing. The identity of the "bad guys" was painfully obvious.

The characters weren't amiable at all, I didn't really care much for any of them, including the main character, Allie. They were all very much like the mass produced heroes and heroines we read about in urban fantasy nowadays. They even seemed one dimensional at times.

Will probably not follow these series, unless the synopse in the back cover of the second book is shiny. I confess I might continue reading just for the quirky world-building. :|

The Elemental Assassin series is one of the most popular urban fantasies out right now so I've been steadily buying the books for a while. I've also been afraid to pick them up and be disappointed.

I was. I mean, I understand why people like the series; the heroine, Gin Blanco is likable enough and she isn't exactly a goody two-shoes. She is unusual. But... as I read the story I felt like I had seen this one too many times. Yep, it's a common movie plot: famous assassin gets double-crossed, famous assassin gets angry and famous assassin goes on a punishing killing spree. Nothing new there.

On the other hand I kind of get that this first book is clearly introduction for the rest as the author does tie all the loose ends and the plot follows quite a neat line. It was a gamble to start with this book, but I think Estep was clever. I prefer an entire book about why Gin retires than just an hasty explanation in a prologue.

Still, besides the over-used plot, a few other things bothered me. Like the fact that we are plunged into Gin's world with little to no explanation. What are elementals? How did they come to be? Are they human? How come vampires can withstand daylight and are they turned or just another kind of wizards? Nothing is explained and with vampires going out in daylight and being overall quite human I'd certainly like to know more. Still, this is just the first in a series, so I suppose I can wait. It just bug me that there was no explanation of Ashland's society.

Another thing that bothered me: the romance. It felt rushed and there was no chemistry. Also, why the heck did Estep think it was a good thing to have Gin call the male protagonist by his full name every single time? Really I got tired of reading the words 'Donovan Caine' every other sentence. Gah!

Overall, this book was a pretty standard urban fantasy. There wasn't anything special about story or characters and the world-building was pretty weak. The writing style was engaging and the pace was good but these are mostly the only things to recommend it. Since it is clearly an introductory book I am hoping the series gets better though.

Leituras de 2011 - Balanço

Com o ano de 2011 quase no fim é chegada a altura de fazer o 'balanço' das leituras. Ainda faltam uns dias, mas penso que já dá para ver mais ou menos quais foram as leituras mais agradáveis e as que mais desapontaram. Este ano li mais livros do que no ano passado e alguns destacaram-se pela positiva:

Chime de Franny Bilingsley (English Review here): Simplesmente fantástico! É uma história de época com magia à mistura que consegue fugir à maioria dos clichés tão comuns na literatura juvenil. As personagens não são estereotipadas, o romance é verosímil e o tom da narrativa acrescenta um toque mágico ao enredo. Adorei este livro, a autora fez um excelente trabalho na construção do seu mundo e da história.

Eon e Eona de Alison Goodman (English Reviews here and here): Uma saga de fantasia de dois livros muito interessante, com um mundo inspirado nas civilizações orientais (China e Japão) e um bom nível de pormenor no desenvolvimento. Uma história épica e mágica que apelará a todos os fans de fantasia.

City of Ghosts (Downside Ghosts, #3) de Stacia Kane: Uma verdadeira lufada de ar fresco no mundo da fantasia urbana, esta é certamente uma das minhas séries preferidas dentro do género. A heroína, Chess é diferente de qualquer outra e o resto das personagens são carismáticas mas ao mesmo tempo humanas. Gostaria de mais desenvolvimento do mundo destes livros (algumas coisas ainda não estão bem explicadas) mas de resto... adoro.

Celestial de Cynthia Hand (Opinião em Português aqui): O que mais dizer deste livro que não tenha dito já antes? Celestial faz parte desta lista porque foi mais uma lufada de ar fresco... um livro original de entre muitos na literatura juvenil. Percebo a aposta da Saída de Emergência nesta série. Se estão fartos do típico romance adolescente que povoa este género, Celestial é vosso livro!

Feed de M.T. Anderson (English Review here): Uma distopia bastante interessante que me pareceu mais do que uma invenção apagada de um mundo futuro. Feed é um livro com alma. O enredo manteve-me interessada e algo arrepiada e definitivamente manteve o meu interesse.

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Vols 01 & 02 de Naoko Takeuchi: Que lista 'best of' estaria completa sem alguma manga? Nenhuma, claro, eheh. Quando soube que iam reeditar esta manga que resultou nos anos 90 num dos meus desenhos animados favoritos fiquei com imensa vontade de ler esta história. Posso dizer que a manga é tão boa como a animação, pelo menos até agora. :D

Eis mais alguns livros de que gostei ou que foram surpresas agradáveis:

- Forsaken e Forbidden de Jana Oliver: uma série que me surpreendeu pela positiva.

- Drink, Slay, Love de Sarah Beth Durst: uma leitura bastante divertida que me agradou imenso.

- Angelfire de Courtney Allison Moulton: outro livro juvenil que foi bem melhor do que esperava.

- Ghost Story de Jim Butcher: do qual gostei bastante apesar de ser já o 13º da série Harry Dresden. Como se sabe as série tendem a ficar piores quando se tornam mais longas, em regra.

- Divergent de Veronica Roth: mais uma distopia que se revelou acima das minhas expectativas.

Se houve livros que adorei ler, outros houve de que não gostei tanto. A Noite de Todas as Almas de Deborah Harkness por exemplo, foi bastante mau. Não consegui acabar de ler o livro porque a história se arrastava e arrastava. The Faerie Ring de Kiki Hamilton foi outro livro que deixei a meio porque sinceramente a história não tinha qualquer nexo.

Quanto aos livros que considerei muito más leituras temos Anjo Caído de Lauren Kate, Bloodring de Faith Hunter, 13 Little Blue Envelopes de Maureen Johnson e Angelologia de Danielle Trussoni. A Luz do Fogo de Sophie Jordan também não foi grande coisa.

Houve ainda algumas obras que me desapontaram bastante quer por ter altas expectativas em relação a elas quer por achar que a autora podia ter feito melhor (os leitores pensam sempre isso, ahah... somos 'escritores de bancada'). São eles Hourglass de Myra McEntire e The Near Witch de Victoria Schwab entre outros.

E pronto, está feito o 'balanço'. :D

After the disappointment that was Bloodring, I wasn't sure when I was going to pick up this book by Faith Hunter. Still, I was in the mood for urban fantasy and a book about a Skinwalker seemed good.

It was... such a frustrating read. Like Bloodring, Skinwalker also distinguishes itself by the relatively original concept but on the other hand the writing style, the overall focus of the narrative and the unlikable heroine ruined the book for me. I'm not sure how to voice my opinions objectively so I guess I'll rant a bit about this book by listing the pros and cons. :P

Pros:

- The Concept: Bloodring had an amazing one and while Skinwalker's was a little more run-of-the-mill urban fantasy it had a nice twist when it came to Jane's origins. I loved the bit about the Skinwalkers and the mysteries behind Jane's past. I don't think I ever read much about Skinwalkers in UF books, except as villains, so I liked it. You can see that Hunter did some research on the mythology she uses (Indian legends and all that). Really good.

- Beast: sure, 'beast-speak' chapters were a little annoying after a while but Beast is a refreshing character. Especially since I didn't like Jane Yellowrock that much.

Cons:

- Writing Style: yep, writing style. Too much useless (and boring) description. I mean, I don't like books where the heroine skips steps and in one scene is doing one thing and in the next is doing something different, but this book exaggerates on the description. Some parts are so info-dumpey and boring I felt like throwing the book at the wall. I get the author had to research several things to write the book but the reader does not need to have it pasted onto the book. Descriptions of weapons (in painful detail) and its uses, descriptions of Jane's bike, descriptions of clothes and jewelry, descriptions of tea and ways to prepare tea. And not just once either. Every time guns appear they are described again and again; every time Jane drinks tea we are treated to a lengthy summary on how she brews it, what kettles she uses, etc, etc. All this seemed unnecessary and distracted me from the story, which felt cluttered with all the description. Gah.

- Plot focus: so, this book has a mildly interesting supernatural mystery going on but the protagonist does very little to solve it. She 'shifts' several times into her 'beast' form to track her quarry but mostly the book is about how Jane Yellowrock establishes relationships with some of the inhabitants of the place she is investigating (mainly she is contrary and rude). Interactions with vampires, their thugs (we are told they are all so full of muscles... and hot) and the rare human (since humans are 'sissies', 'weak' and 'prey') are what most of this book is about.

- Jane Yellowrock: ... reminded me a lot of Anita Blake. And not in a good way. She is contrary and rude to everyone, doesn't understand 'girly things' like eating salads, make-up and dresses. Of course she is of the opinion (just like most men, apparently) that all women are weak, feeble and whimsical. Oh and dumb as rocks. They can't fight, hold their own or handle guns. As such, Jane is not your typical female, no! She is tough, wears leather and of course 'fights like a man', is good at sports (we all know all women suck at sports) and can shoot guns. And likes steaks... because we all know women wouldn't dare to eat such a manly food as steaks (rare) or drink bear. Of course, in pursuit of being the perfect warrior (which can only be male... women are weaklings) she can't be sexy or beautiful or feminine.

So basically, the protagonist's attitude made me gag. I just hope she has a better side to her because well this behaviour is very outdated, I think. I'm not saying Jane had to like frilly pink dresses, but to erase all traces of female personality from the character? Maybe Hunter should write about John Yellowrock instead? O.o

Overall: this book had many of the same problems as Bloodring. The over-the-top description, the focus of the narrative and the heroine who lacks charisma (really I doubt male or female readers would identify with her). The concept is great, sure, but the execution is messy and leaves much to be desired. Still, I want to know more about Jane's world (yes, the concept and general world-building are that good) and that is why I gave it this rating (and not one star or close). A bit better than Bloodring, but still not enough to be truly enjoyable.

No Proper Lady was an impulse buy (I know I have a lot of those, gah). I wanted to read an historical romance, but somehow I also wanted a bit of paranormal. So when I read the synopsis for this book, I thought it was exactly what I was looking for.

And it was, in a way. The idea is still pretty good. The execution (yes, you read right, it's one of those... sigh), however...

I was okay with time travel and Joan being a though female. Very good. I did not like the way her first encounter with Simon (the hero) went down. It appears Simon is a wizard and doesn't frown on bright lights and women from the future... which means he pretty much took it in stride and didn't doubt her. There was no fights, no disbelief, no period of adjustment. It was like: "Oh right I'll help a strange woman, give her dresses and all". I just... didn't feel like it was realistic behaviour.

Also it bugged me that the focus of the book was Joan learning to fit Victorian society. Half the book is about that (and the instantaneous attraction between her and Simon) and I was kind of bored, because, well it was boring and the interactions were not very interesting. Or conductive to attraction. Basically, the protagonists had no chemistry.

After this first half, Joan and company move to London to meet their foe (Simon's former friend), who could have been a layered, complex character but ended up being the villain of the jour. As mean as they come and strangely with a tendency for self-pity (Woe, no-one understands my evilness) that made me roll my eyes. The part where the heroes deal with this very dangerous villain is short and anti-climatic after all the talk of him being so powerful and so dangerous. It was like Cooper was tired of the story and decided to end it abruptly after spending much of the book focusing on Joan and how she couldn't dance or eat properly.

I think the major problem with this book is that it tries to be too much: time-travel story, mystery and thriller, paranormal fiction, historical romance... and consequently none of these are very well developed. Same for the characters.

I did like the descriptions of Joan's world (great setting for gritty urban fantasy) and her flashgun. I did not, however, like Joan that much. I didn't connect with any of the characters, really.

Overall: No Proper Lady could have been an interesting book (it certainly had an interesting idea behind it) but the author seemed to want to cram so much into the story it ended up being underdeveloped. And generally boring, except for a few select parts. Not a "time-travel romance" I would recommend.

Review: Forbidden

And... the plot thickens.

I wasn't sure if I was going to be disappointed with this second book or not. Even if I only gave 3 and half stars to the first book I actually think these are very original and cool stories for young adults. My main problem with "Forsaken" was the lack of background story in some parts, but the author resolved that in this second book. I liked "Forbidden" well enough too, I just wasn't convinced with Ori. I get why Ori and Simon are in Riley's life but honestly I just wanted her to get rid of them and move on (you readers of this series know who I'm talking about, eheh). None of them were very appealing, from the start.

In this second book, Riley Blackthorne has even more problems to contend with. After the attack on the Trappers' Guild suspicions are high, especially because her father appeared a few moments before they were ambushed... so now Riley has to deal with the other trappers thinking she betrayed them in addiction to being the first (and only) female trapper. Then there's the fact that a fiend is after her and Ori, the mysterious demon hunter is following her everywhere.

So in "Forbidden" Riley's life takes a turn for the worse. She was already looked at funny for being a female trapper and now people think she's in league with the fiends. As I said, the plot thickens.

I felt like the story moved very slowly (as in the first book). While a lot of stuff happens to Riley, nothing significant happens in terms of plot except in the final chapters (as with the first book). You get a sense that there is something more to the story but there is no real development, which is frustrating.

So why the four stars? Well, just because the story moves at a snail's pace it doesn't mean it wasn't an entertaining book. It was. Riley is a very likable character and I really liked the fact that we also have Beck's perspective on things (Beck is a great character). Oh and Peter is very cool too.

Plus, Oliver does give us a lot more information about her world in this book and I was pretty happy with that. Still think it's a weird set up for a young adult series (it reads like adult UF most of the time), but it's really good nonetheless.

So, basically, while the plot seems to be shaping up to be pretty interesting (if the author manages to gives all the proper background story it needs), the strong point of this series are its charismatic characters (including the Magpie, eheh) and the original and complex (for an YA book) world. I admit Ori spoiled it a bit for me (and the fact that there was almost but not quite insta-love in this book as well), but in general I liked this book.

Overall "Forbidden" was another engaging read. The characters seem to have depth and the story is engrossing. There are a few YA tropes at play (like all the yummy-licious guys after the heroine), but I think the story is very well-thought and the world building is top notch for YA books. The author really is trying to write more than a paranormal romance and I think that's positive. Perhaps it won't appeal to everyone since the romance is definitely secondary but for everyone who's looking for a nice urban fantasy story reminiscent of the Kate Daniels' series, The Demon Trappers books won't disappoint, I think.

Riley Blacktorn lives in an old hotel with her father, a demon trapper. Demon trapping is dangerous work and it barely pays the bills, but Riley wants to be a trapper anyway... the first female trapper. Except... something is not right. The fiends have taken too much interest in her and when the worst happens, Riley will have to face prejudiced trappers, an annoying acquaintance, thieving necromancers and of course... some determined fiends.

I had 'mixed' expectations about this book. P7 really liked it and she usually likes the same books I do but I was a little wary at first because the synopsis said something about three guys and I was imagining lots of teen drama about romance and guys.You know, same old, same old.

Fortunately, it didn't happen (the love quadrangle, what?). The book reads a lot like an adult urban fantasy (it reminded me of the Kate Daniels series which I love to bits, actually). I liked the world-building even though it was a bit inconsistent at times: I mean the author doesn't explain if all the magic being public is a recent thing or not. So I was a little disappointed because there is much about Riley's world that's not explained. I also didn't like Simon much.

I did love Riley she was kick-ass without being bitchy; she was pretty cute. Oh and of course I liked Beck, eheh. I think Jana Oliver really wrote something intricate and original in terms of young adult fiction.

The story did drag a bit, but overall I liked all the action, Riley and Beck. The ending was pretty good and left me very interested in the next book.

E a cada dia que passa são mais os jovens que sofrem mutações e adquirem capacidades sobrenaturais, que os distinguem dos que não têm esse género de poderes. A tensão cresce e o caos reina na cidade. São os «normais» contra os mutantes. Cada um, luta por si, e até os melhores são capazes de matar. Mas avista-se um problema ainda maior. A Sombra, uma criatura sinistra que vive soterrada no coração das montanhas, começa a chamar alguns dos adolescentes da ZRJ. A chamá-los, a guiá-los, a manipulá-los. A Sombra despertou. E tem fome. Nem todo o ouro do mundo seria pagamento suficiente para o que Lana tencionava fazer. O ouro não alterava em nada o terror frio que lhe enchia o coração. E se falhasse não precisaria do ouro para nada. Não podia subornar a Sombra. Mas talvez… talvez a pudesse matar."

AVISO: Contém pequenos SPOILERS!

Este livro pareceu-me ser mais para "encher chouriços" do que outra coisa. Ainda existem muitas perguntas no ar, certamente, e o autor tornou a conseguir tornar o enredo verosímil, mas pouco acontece neste livro, em termos de história.

As personagens evoluíram mais ou menos como estava à espera depois do primeiro livro; e claro, a revolta dos "humanos" contra as "aberrações", tão à X-men era também previsível. Gostei do facto do autor introduzir problemas no seu mundo fechado que outros autores têm algum receio de abordar: nomeadamente, neste livro, a fome (ou a falta de comida). Já li outros livros em que os protagonistas estavam num espaço isolado mas acho que em todos os casos eram alimentados. Em "Fome" vêem-se claramente as consequências de vida desregrada de crianças sem supervisão.

Também achei bastante realista o facto do protagonista, Sam, não se tornar de repente um herói sem falhas e cheio de responsabilidade. Continua a ser humano e antes de tudo... um rapaz de 15 anos (e yay, não é misterioso, um ladies man, etc, etc).

Ou seja, no que diz respeito às personagens e à sua evolução, não tenho razões de queixa. Mais uma vez, acho que Grant fez um trabalho excelente. Agora o enredo é outra história.

Como já disse, muito pouco se passou. Descobrimos mais algumas coisas sobre a "Sombra" e sobre a situação em geral, mas em termos de 'acção' e comparando com o primeiro livro, este segundo é bastante parado. Diria mesmo que é talvez um pouco aborrecido por vezes. Creio que aqui as personagens são mesmo o foco central.

Em geral, uma boa adição à série. As personagens conseguem levar o leitor investir emocionalmente na história. As interacções entre os habitantes de Perdido Beach é quase suficiente para tornar este livro de leitura compulsiva. Infelizmente, depois da acção quase non-stop da primeira entrega, os leitores sentirão algum desapontamento devido ao ritmo mais lento da história. Mesmo assim, uma boa leitura.

Este livro foi surpreendentemente bom. Devido à premissa um pouco mirabolante e depois da crítica da Jen, que me deixou um pouco de pé atrás por causa da violência (que temi que pudesse ser gratuita) tinha expectativas baixas. Mas Michael Grant conseguiu cativar-me!

Um dia todos os adultos em Perdido Beach, EUA, desaparecem. Num momento estão lá e no outro... puff. Todos mesmo. Todos com mais de 14 anos. E só ficam as crianças.

Sam Temple, 14 anos, surfista, está na aula quando se dá o fenómeno. Ao princípio pensa que se trata de uma brincadeira... mas depois percebe que o mesmo aconteceu por toda a escola, por toda a cidade.

Agora Perdido Beach e arredores é habitada apenas por miúdos, que imediatamente esquecem as responsabilidades; a vida é bela: sem escola e sem adultos é só jogar, ver televisão e comer doces. Mas Sam e os amigos Quinn, Astrid e Emilio andam à procura do pequeno irmão de Astrid, que é autista e sabem que nem tudo está bem... porque há uma parede intransponível que rodeia a cidade; e porque de repente há cobras com asas e coiotes falantes. E, claro, há também os poderes...

"Desaparecidos" é parte thriller e parte ficção científica e parece ser uma mistura bem conseguida de "O Senhor das Moscas", "X-Men" e "Perdidos". A premissa tinha o potencial para se tornar uma desgraça irrealista, mas o autor conseguiu dar à história uma magnífica verosimilhança.

As personagens são igualmente realísticas e comportam-se na generalidade das situações, como as jovens crianças do século XXI que são. Certas cenas de violência e bullying extremo são chocantes, certamente, mas penso que não fogem muito à realidade do que seria o comportamento de um bando de crianças e pré-adolescentes numa situação extrema.

Cheio de acção, suspense e algumas cenas chocantes, "Desaparecidos" é um thriller de ficção científica que deixará os leitores em pulgas para saber o que vem a seguir. Há tantos mistérios meio absurdos a ser desvendados que certamente os leitores se sentirão compelidos a ler o próximo volume "Fome". Recomendado aos amantes de ficção científica e da série "Perdidos" (comparação que me deixa um bocado receosa, uma vez que não gosto assim muito desta série mas pronto); mas atenção, algumas partes do livro são um pouco desagradáveis.

Décadas mais tarde, uma família vem passar férias a esta casa. As crianças depressa se vêem envolvidas no jogo. Só que elas não sabem as regras. Nem tão-pouco que são os peões, e não os jogadores…"

Sangue Ruim narra a história de uma família constituída por filhos de dois casamentos. Roley e Cat(riona) e John e Kat(herine), dois 'pares de irmãos' esforçam-se para se conhecer e dar bem uns com os outros... ou pelo menos John e Roley fazem-no. Cat e Kat encontram-se em luta constante alimentada pelo facto dos seus nomes resultarem no mesmo diminutivo e nenhuma delas estar disposta a abdicar do mesmo.

Quando Peter, o pai de Katherine e John recebe um envelope com uma chave e descobre que a casa de infância da falecida mulher lhe foi deixada em testamento, a família decide ir passar algum tempo de férias na região. Ao princípio a casa parece ser um sonho... mas em breve a estranha boneca que aparece em todo o lado, os livros rasurados e os cadernos onde estão escrevinhadas as regras de um estranho jogo fazem com que os 'irmãos' se comecem a sentir ameaçados.

Sangue Ruim tinha quase tudo para ser uma boa história de suspense e fantasia, mas a fraca execução estragou tudo. Não nego que é uma leitura rápida e que muitos dos elementos do enredo são interessantes, mas a história está tão mal desenvolvida, é tão incipiente que se tornou frustrante ler o livro, por vezes.

A rivalidade entre Kat e Cat pareceu-me despropositada; Harriet e Peter, os pais, pareceram-me demasiado passivos e ausentes; Alice pareceu-me ter sido atirada para o meio da história ao calhas e Emily e Charlotte pouco aparecem (e tendo em conta quem são deveriam aparecer muito mais). Não consegui ligar-me a nenhuma das personagens porque são todas muito superficiais e estereotipadas, para além de terem muito pouco carisma.

Quanto ao enredo em si, como já disse, achei que estava bastante mal explorado. A ideia da autora nem era má de todo, mas houve demasiado que ficou por explicar (mas enumerar tudo seria um grandessíssimo spoiler) e penso que Lassiter poderia ter desenvolvido muito mais o jogo e os seus objectivos, a finalidade das personagens criadas e o papel de John.

O final foi abrupto e sinceramente, anti-climático.

No geral, uma obra com muito pouco que se recomende excepto, talvez o conceito. E uma boa utilização dos múltiplos pontos de vista. As personagens e a história mereceram pouca atenção da parte da autora e esta nunca conseguiu deixar-me verdadeiramente em suspense enquanto o enredo se desenrolava. Nada de especial.

O "Casamento do Ano" inaugura uma nova série de romances históricos passados nos inícios do século XX. Neste livro encontramos personagens de livros anteriores (os Marlowe e os Weston, mas nenhuma das suas histórias foi ainda publicada em Portugal) e somos apresentados a Beatrix (estava sempre a ler "Belatrix" o que me distraia bastante da história) e Will, os protagonistas.

Os livros de Laura Lee Guhrke são geralmente "hit or miss" para mim. Ou seja, algumas das suas obras são tão agradáveis de ler que ocupam um lugar na minha lista de livros preferidos dentro do género (falo de "Prazeres Proibidos" e de "And then he Kissed Her", por exemplo) enquanto outras são pura e simplesmente medíocres e nada memoráveis.

Apesar de ter gostado bastante do ambiente em que a história se desenvolve - em 1901, onde temos ainda a clássica aristocracia britânica mas também telegramas, carros e electricidade - a história não me agradou particularmente.

O romance histórico é um género muito dependente das personagens. A história é, na maior parte das vezes, formulaica e contém sempre os mesmos elementos: passados trágicos, um macho alfa, uma heroína decidida e claro, muita química. Por isso é normalmente a construção das personagens o elemento-chave nestes livros. Se as personagens são interessantes, se as suas interacções são interessantes então o livro será interessante.

Em "O Casamento do Ano" isto não acontece. Tanto Will como Bea(trix) são personagens sem sal e mais importante, não há qualquer tipo de química entre eles. Oh, eles discutem, eles não gostam um do outro, mas toda essa ferocidade pareceu falsa e morna. Quando as personagens secundárias me interessam mais do que as principais é um sinal claro de que a autora está a fazer alguma coisa mal. Sinceramente não queria saber se Will (que achei um idiota, no geral) e Beatrix (uma chata) ficavam juntos no final. E é esse interesse que um autor de romance histórico tem de criar.

Assim, suponho que este romance de Laura Lee Gurhke se vai juntar à pilha dos que foram um 'miss' para mim. Calculo que isto se tenha devido um pouco também à tradução pois li todas as outras obras da autora em inglês e consegui detectar os erros (na tradução) a milhas. Mas pronto.

No geral, "O Casamento do Ano" não é, definitivamente, uma das melhores obras da autora. Para os que queiram experimentar algo de Laura Lee Guhrke recomendo o livro "Prazeres Proibidos", uma leitura muito divertida e enternecedora.

Eis que chegamos ao último livro da saga, a conclusão da luta épica de Katniss e dos companheiros contra a tirania do Capitólio.

Katniss Everdeen sobreviveu novamente aos temidos "Jogos da Fome". Foi resgatada pelos rebeldes do infame Distrito 13, que toda a gente pensava ter sido há muito destruído. Na verdade, tornou-se a base do movimento contra a ditadura do Capitólio.

Ferida, confusa e traumatizada pelo aprisionamento de Peeta, o seu companheiro dos Jogos, Katniss tem agora de lidar com o facto de que se tornou num símbolo de rebelião, um tordo livre que voa para longe e zomba do Capitólio com as suas acções.

Sinceramente, estava à espera de não gostar particularmente deste livro. A maioria dos fans da série classificou este como o pior dos três e muitos confessaram-se desiludidos. Estranhamente, no entanto, dei por mim a gostar imenso desta leitura. Para mim, "A Revolta" foi bastante superior aos outros dois. E aquela questão que eu tinha sobre como é que a autora ia conseguir "resolver a batalha épica que se avizinha em apenas um livro"? Bem, foi respondida. De forma aceitável, se não perfeita. Apesar de Suzanne Collins deixar bastantes pontas soltas no final do livro, creio que as questões principais são resolvidas.

Gostei do que a autora fez com a história. No fundo, "A Revolta" está estruturado de forma semelhante aos livros anteriores, ou seja, Katniss e os seus aliados estão perdidos numa versão gigantesca dos "Jogos da Fome". Mas, ao mesmo tempo, Collins conseguiu avançar suficientemente com o enredo para nos dar uma conclusão satisfatória. Claro que, como disse, alguns assuntos foram deixados na obscuridade - por exemplo, continuamos sem saber que flagelo destruiu os Estados Unidos e o que aconteceu no resto do mundo.

O que mais me agradou no livro foram as personagens. Certamente que Katniss continua a ser uma personagem algo desconectada das suas emoções, mas ao mesmo tempo as situações do passado e do presente tornam-na mais humana. As consequências das suas acções finalmente apanham a nossa protagonista fazendo com que as suas reacções sejam mais realistas.

Todas as personagens me pareceram pois bastante reais. Katniss não se transformou numa heroína que salva, sozinha, Panem inteira; Peeta sofre por causa do que lhe foi feito; os rebeldes não são pessoas muito boazinhas, têm defeitos e agendas. Ou seja, as personagens estão construídas de modo realista e parecem muito humanas. Não há uma clara definição de quem são os heróis e os vilões, o que está certo e o que está errado, o que é branco e o que é preto.

No geral, "A Revolta" foi uma boa conclusão para a trilogia. As personagens crescem, o cenário é aterrador pelo seu realismo e achei toda a construção do enredo bastante boa. Claro que há muito que fica por explicar mas este livro surpreendeu-me pela positiva. Uma leitura recomendada.

After reading "The Agency" by Y.S. Lee, I felt like reading something historical... and romantic. So I picked up "To Seduce a Sinner" by Elizabeth Hoyt, one of my favorite authors within the genre.

And as always, Hoyt didn't disappoint.

Jasper Renshaw, Viscount Vale is left at the altar by his fianceé, Miss Templeton. As he sits pondering on how he had managed to alienate her, a woman enters the room. She is Melisande Fleming a shy, plain girl who is often overlooked by men. Melisande offers her hand in marriage and Jasper thinks, why not? He has to marry after all. It is only after the wedding that he begins to see that his wife is much more than she first appeared

Melisande has been in love with Lord Vale for years. A secret, silent love for he doesn't notice her. So when the chance to marry him comes she doesn't hesitate. Now she finds herself married to the man of her dreams... and discovering he is different from what she first thought.

I really like the arranged marriage theme in historical romance so this book was right up my alley. Melisande and Vale were both very charismatic and interesting, with their suitably tortured pasts. The pace was great, they got to know each other in a somewhat realistic manner and I really liked how the author explored the problem of PTSD which, of course, was not something that was recognized in those times.

Of course the book was incredibly formulaic, but it was still an engrossing read.

Overall, an entertaining historical romance. Well written, interesting and with captivating characters, it will appeal to fans of the genre.

"A Spy in the House" is the first book in a new series featuring Mary Quinn, a Victorian heroine.

It is 1858 and Mary Quinn (formerly a street urchin) is drafted into "The Agency", a mysterious organization where all the agents are (apparently) women. The supposition that women are easily ignored because they are considered beings of inferior understanding is what drives this Agency. According to the leaders, women make the better spies.

So, Mary is sent on her first mission: to be a paid companion to the daughter of a rich merchant who seems to be smuggling jewels. She is to keep her ears open and report back. Seems like a fairly simple mission... except that Mary isn't happy with just sitting back and listening; and there is James Easton, a handsome engineer who is also investigating her charges.

At first glance, "A Spy in the House" looks like a fun mystery with lively characters, plenty of suspense and some romance. It is an entertaining read, sure. But there are too many inconsistencies with the plot construction and world building.

While I recognize Mary is not your typical female (she is an agent after all) I still didn't understand James' reactions to her behavior. He seems to take the fact that she's a sleuth and dresses like a boy more or less in stride. It's something that you see a lot in historical romances, but there it has a purpose. In a YA book that is first and foremost a historical mystery I really don't think it worked. I mean, Mary might be ahead of her time but she still has to conform to the norms of Victorian society. That didn't happen... there were a few occasions when her reputation would have been severely compromised. It kind of bothered me because if she was trying to prove that women are better spies then the best thing to do was to behave as a model of Victorian female perfection... which she didn't.

Another problem I had with the book: Mary and James didn't seem all that smart. She agrees to enter "a partnership" with a virtual stranger (James) because he told her he was investigating the Thorolds (the family she was meant to watch); he believed her story about investigating the disappearance of a maid, yet wasn't suspicious even once when she seemed more interested in the Thorold's financial records.

Also, the chemistry between James and Mary? Not good.

Overall: "A Spy in the House" was an interesting debut, with a compelling mystery, yes, but still rather lackluster. The mystery, the characters' behavior and the world building were implausible really. While I liked the book in general I felt there were many flaws in the portrayal of Victorian life, beliefs and behavior.

Eh. How to start this review? Ah yes. There are vampires in this book. Lots of vampires. If you are tired of vampires... read this!!

Pearl is a vampire. A bad vampire (or a good one, depending on your point of view). She lives in a basement, can't stand the sun and snacks on Brad the ice-cream boy every other night... she doesn't sparkle, sure, but that is a minor detail.

One day, after snacking (again) on Brad, she sees something that does spark... and isn't supposed to exist: a unicorn. A unicorn that stabs her in the heart with its shiny horn.

Pearl thinks she's done for, so when she wakes up on her doorstep safe and sound the next dawn she is puzzled. And even more when she discovers she can actually stand in daylight! Her parents are pretty happy and she soon has a mission: to infiltrate the local high school and round up some ~~cattle~~ people to feed the vampire king. Easy peasy? Not so much when you actually talk to the food. And start to grow a conscience.

Features evil (and not sparkly) vampires, very sparkly unicorns, scheming high schoolers and newbie vampire hunters. Oh and 80's TV shows.

"Drink, Slay, Love" was the funniest book I've read in a while. Sarah Beth Durst really managed to write a great vampire themed parody - ok, maybe her Twilight snark had something to do with the fact that I loved this book, but I'm pretty sure that it was the rest too. Like how she managed to make the most ridiculous-sounding plot ever work really well. Or how there wasn't insta-love. Or how Pearl seemed so genuine and truly grew throughout the book.

Pearl is a delightful heroine. She really is pretty mean at the beginning, but she's never a character you don't like. From page one she has charisma.

I must say I wasn't very enthused with Evan or Bethany (the other main characters in the story) but I did like Tara and Pearl's adventures in the track team with Sana made me think of Japanese shoujo manga (may it be because it was a track team? Or because the girl was named "Sana"? Eheh.) Pearl's family was hilariously evil and Uncle Pascha was great with his long chess game and his Shakespeare quotes.

The story was pretty standard but the author's humorous prose and the characters made it an easy, engrossing read.

There is not much more to say about the book, except that it was a funny, good read. It was what Insatiable by Meg Cabot would have been if the author had managed to write really amusing characters. I really liked Pearl, she was a great protagonist and was amazed at how the author managed to turn an idea that could have gone badly wrong into a gripping story. I think people who are tired of the old cliches of vampire (and YA paranormal) fiction will probably like this.

I don't really do this at all, but I just have to add a "notable quote" from this book. Ah!

"After three gulps of AB-negative, she said. "I saw a My Little Pony refugee. Horselike. Kind of glowy. Big sharp horn. It looked as if it had jumped off a poster from the bedroom of an eight-year-old girl. (...)"

"Shut Out" is a quick, easy read just like "The DUFF", Keplinger's first novel was.

Kody Keplinger tries her hand at writing a modern, teen version of the Greek play "Lysistrata" by Aristophanes with her new novel.

The main character is Lissa Daniels, girlfriend of the quarterback of the football team. Except in her school there isn't only a football team... there's also a soccer team. And they've been at each other's throats forever. So Lissa decides to take action and she and the other players' girlfriends decide to withhold sex until the rivalry is over.

Like I said before I enjoyed this book. I liked the fact that the author managed to tackle an important issue: sex in high school, how differently boys and girls view it and are treated. This matter is handled in a rather obvious manner as the girls get together, talk and basically rehash all the ideas that usually form the core of teen mentality on sex (and of many adults as well, unfortunately). Keplinger exposes the double standard existent in our society concerning sex and gender.
Of course, like I said, the author is 'obvious' about it but I think it's important to pass the message and this is a teen book after all, so the fact that she isn't exactly 'subtle' didn't bother me very much.

Sex and gender issues aside, "Shut Out" is basically a teen romance with all the stereotypes that come with the genre: the jerk boyfriend, the sexy hero (here named Cash Sterling which is as bad as Griffin King, really) and the torn heroine. Misunderstandings and lust ensue.

The characters were pretty much stereotypes and weren't particularly well developed.

Overall, "Shut Out" was a fun, quick read that uncovers the views and prejudices of our modern, supposedly equal society concerning sex. This is explored in a light manner but it still makes an important point: that when we talk about sex there is no normal, no definite rules and that the double standard is actually upheld by both men and most women due mostly to education and wrongful perpetuation of old values. It's not exactly a subtle, layered book but it entertains and tries to address an important subject and that has some merit.

"Mercy" is an 'angel book'. And I don't usually have much luck with books about angels; I disliked "Hush, Hush" immensely, thought "Fallen" was awful and was even disappointed with "A Touch Mortal". The only exception was "Unearthly" which I thought was a real breath of fresh air.

So I've had "Mercy" on my shelf for a while now but I've been a bit weary of reading it. All this to say that I picked this book up with strong reservations but it ended being a great read!

Mercy doesn't know who or what she is; not really. She doesn't even know if her name is Mercy. She only knows that she takes over random people's bodies again and again, living borrowed life after borrowed life without having any control over when she wakes up in a different one.

She's been living like this for what is seems like forever, losing old memories and building new ones. The only thing that keeps her anchored are her dream conversations with beautiful Luc.

When Mercy wakes up in the body of teenager Carmen Zappacosta she prepares herself for a new life and a new set of memories. She soon becomes immersed in Carmen's life, an insecure girl who sings at a choir and is boarding with a family torn apart by the disappearance of their daughter, Lauren, two years ago. While pretending to be Carmen, Mercy tries to find out what happened with the help of Lauren's twin brother Ryan and at the same time begins to piece together what happened to her.

So... why is "Mercy" different from other YA books with angels?

Rebecca Lim did a brilliant job when creating Mercy that's why. Most YA paranormals feature a supernatural character that is hundreds of years old, but they don't act it. They act like teenagers. Which I can understand, to a point. These books try to appeal to young adult readers after all.

But Lim shows us that you can write a character who's very old and in a teen's body but still realistic. Mercy's voice is weary, tired of life, sardonic at times. She's been through a lot, through lives and it shows. At the same time, the fact that she loses her memories makes her lack the sort of wisdom an immortal being would have. She experiences things over and over again but they never lose their 'freshness' completely. As such she is always level with humans.

Mercy was then, the reason I loved this book so much. Her characterization is great. Other characters are interesting as well, sufficiently multi-layered (especially Ryan and his parents), but Mercy was the real stroke of genius.

As for the story, I liked it well enough. The "mystery" was pretty straightforward, although I must say that the author made me doubt my suspicions once or twice; still the villain ended being who I thought it was.

I preferred to read about Mercy's journey to find herself and her identity. It's not yet over, because she doesn't really know everything, but it seems to be shaping up to be a rather epic and engrossing story.

That's why I'll be getting the rest of the books as soon as possible.

Overall, "Mercy" was, like "Unearthly" a breath of fresh air. I loved Mercy as a character and as the protagonist; she was strong and focused, not flighty like so many heroines in YA books. I really liked what I glimpsed of her story and I want to know more. There is almost no romance in this book, so probably not everyone will enjoy it if they like romance with their books, but I loved the story just the way it was. Recommended!

Ahem... seguindo a recente tradição começada pela Jo do blogue Cantos Quebrados, aqui está a primeira edição da rubrica "Guilty Pleasures". O objectivo é, claro, expor os nossos "prazeres proibidos", eheh.

Esta semana apresento-vos um género que gosto bastante de ler: o romance histórico. Sabem, aqueles livros com aquelas capas horrorosas que só apetece esconder quando se está a ler em público? Pois bem, admito, tenho uma boa colecção deles nas estantes e gosto de os ler (ora tomem)! São leituras leves e quase sempre satisfazem porque sabemos que o final é sempre feliz e porque apresentam uma versão do mundo que por vezes gostaríamos que fosse verdade... e claro, aprende-se sempre alguma coisa porque apesar de serem romances, são também livros históricos e os autores têm de fazer alguma pesquisa.

"A Northern Light" is a difficult book to give an opinion about, because while I was reading it I was not pulled to the story all that much. I disliked the way the plot was structured: it opens with Mattie (Mathilda) our main character working at a hotel to make some money. It also opens with the death of a young woman, a guest at the hotel. This woman, Grace Brown has given something to Mattie; something that can help solve the mystery of her drowning.

I was pretty thrilled with the first chapter. I thought this would be a mystery book with a young maid as the sleuth.

But... it wasn't. In a way the story is much, much better: it's actually the story of Mattie, of her life, her friendships and all the hardship that comes from being a young woman in rural America in the early 1900s. Especially a young woman who likes to read and has dreams. I quickly grew to love this part of the story, the harshness of the character's life and Mattie's personality.

That is why I didn't understand the need for the random chapters speckled throughout, about the murdered girl and about what she gave to Mattie. These chapters are few and sometimes far between and are basically Mattie's present. The rest of the story is a retelling of what led to Mattie being in the hotel, working.

Basically, what bothered me, as I said above, was the structure. Why not follow a strait timeline and present the mystery in the end? I thought the "present chapters" (let's call them that) were detrimental because they cut the flow of Mattie's own story. And even if these "present chapters" end up being about Mattie as well and very important, I just didn't feel like those letters Grace gave to Mattie should have mattered that much.

Royal's attitude, Miss Wilcox's story and example, Mattie's own character; yes, I could see her making her decision because of one of these factors (or maybe all); but the letters... didn't seem like a proper trigger for change.

Overall: I loved this book's main story, Mattie's. There were a few parts that could have been better - Weaver for example sometimes didn't seem very smart if you take his attitudes into account - but on the whole I really liked reading about the harsh life of farmers and the harsh life of women in 1906. I loved Mattie's spirit. I do think however that adding the story of Grace Brown's murder (which happens to be a real story, I discovered) to the mix was not for the best. Opiniões: Menos é mais?

Há algum tempo atrás eu e mais alguns bibliófilos discutíamos, num tópico de um fórum, opiniões literárias. Já não lhes chamo críticas porque enfim, a maioria de nós, bloggers, escreve um texto subjectivo sobre o que lemos.

Ora bem, mas como dizia eu e outros amantes de livros trocávamos posts sobre aquilo que achávamos que constituía ou não uma boa opinião num blogue sobre livros. Eu perguntei se os meus companheiros de discussão achavam relevante o tamanho do texto (da opinião), uma vez que tinha lido comentários onde os leitores se queixavam do tamanho, que desencorajava a leitura.

E fiquei a pensar... o que acham vocês (eventuais leitores do blogue)? Como preferem as vossas opiniões? Grandes ou pequenas? Focadas em aspectos como o desenvolvimento da história, do mundo e das personagens? Ou apenas um resumo da história e uma ou duas frases do autor da opinião dizendo que sim senhora gostou ou que não senhora não gostou? E... preferem opiniões com classificações (numéricas, estrelinhas, etc) ou sem?

Digam de vossa justiça (não se esqueçam de dizer porque é que preferem uma maneira ou de outra, se puderem)! :D

Depois de uma longa ausência, aqui temos (mais uma vez, aleatoriamente se bem que no dia certo) nova edição de "Booking Through Thursday". Sem mais delongas, a pergunta da semana:

Em condições normais, preferirias ler um livro difícil/desafiante/recompensador ou um leve/agradável/fácil?

Hmm... depende de imensos factores, normalmente. Mesmo em condições normais.

O problema com esta pergunta é que não concordo muito com os termos. Um livro pode ser leve e fácil de ler e ao mesmo tempo desafiante (pelos conceitos); por outro lado um livro pode ser leve mas difícil de ler (porque o leitor não gosta da história, por exemplo). Penso também que, na maioria dos casos, qualquer leitura é recompensadora. Certamente que há alguns livros que são mais fáceis de ler do que outros mas não creio que isso se prenda com o tipo de escrita ou com o tema... apenas com a disposição do leitor.

Como na famosa canção de Katy Perry (e peço desculpa pela menção de uma cantora pop numa opinião sobre um clássico) a história de "Jane Eyre" foi, para mim, "hot and cold" (quente e fria). Por vezes achei-a interessante (a parte do mistério gótico, momentos da infância de Jane e ínfimas partes do romance) e noutras... horrivelmente aborrecida (a parte em que Jane se encontra com esse possessor de imensas virtudes que é o St John Rivers, provavelmente a personagem estereotipo com mais estereótipos nela concentrados - tipo Sunquick).

Talvez isto se prenda com o facto de ter lido a obra em inglês; confesso que não estou muito habituada a ler este tipo de livros no original e penso que a linguagem (bem mais rebuscada do que Austen) fez com que a leitura se tornasse, por vezes, penosa.

Mas a maior parte prende-se com as personagens. Os protagonistas são pouco carismáticos: a personagem de Jane Eyre parece limitar-se a ser um receptáculo para determinados valores e filosofias ou uma forma de retratar realidades da época... não me pareceu especialmente humana, a não ser numa ou duas cenas, particularmente quando finalmente perde a compostura com o Sr Rochester e lhe diz (com sentimento): "Do you think I am an automaton? — a machine without feelings? and can bear to have my morsel of bread snatched from my lips, and my drop of living water dashed from my cup? (...)"; aí, confesso, achei-a soberba, entrevi aquilo que esta personagem podia ser mas não foi devido à sua educação rígida e à sua moral intransigente (e tão Vitoriana). Mas, como dizia, Jane Eyre é um estereotipo. Claro. Mas é apenas um estereotipo, nada mais. Não se desenvolve de modo a ser algo diferente, uma personagem, uma personalidade distinta para além do estereotipo de toda uma classe de mulheres trabalhadoras da época Vitoriana e os seus valores morais. Jane parece realmente sempre à beira de inovar, de virar as costas à rigidez da educação, a deixar sair a jovem fogosa que responde à sua tia com dez anos quase nas primeiras páginas... mas nunca acontece.

Quanto ao Sr Rochester... bem, digamos que não entendo bem porque é que a Jane se apaixonou por ele. Não há qualquer base coerente para o romance.

A frequente menção aos atributos físicos tanto da Jane como do Sr Rochester deixou-me algo irritada. Obviamente Charlotte Bronte decidiu que todas as personagens belas seriam insidiosas e hipócritas (com a excepção de Rosamond Oliver que mesmo assim é apenas 'normal') e as feias, excepcionais.

Então... porquê a classificação?

Porque o livro tem momentos interessantes. Por causa de personagens como Bertha, que merece completamente ter um livro só dela porque em termos de personagens é a que mostra mais promessa. E porque reconheço que esta obra terá tido uma filosofia e história algo controversas na altura em que foi escrita (apesar do final cor-de-rosa, certamente para apaziguar os ânimos) embora não seja nada de extraordinário actualmente pois a personagem não tem fogo, ou pelo menos eu não acho que tenha quando confrontada com escolhas que a fariam desviar-se dos seus valores morais. Oh certamente, como sabemos Jane Eyre acaba com o Sr Rochester; mas apenas depois de todos os entraves à união terem sido removidos de modo a não comprometer o rígido código moral da jovem de 18 anos (quem é que tem um carácter daqueles aos 18 anos, de qualquer modo?). Jane Eyre, à beira do precipício escolhe não se atirar e não é por o visitar novamente, quando se encontra escorado, que passa a ser uma personagem inovadora.

Não tiro a este livro o seu mérito ou importância literária, obviamente, pois quem sou eu para o fazer? Mas esperava um romance mais faiscante e uma personagem mais fogosa. Claro que os diálogos são apropriadamente melodramáticos mas é preciso mais do que diálogos para tornar realista a acção que se descreve. Tendo agora lido livros das três irmãs Bronte devo dizer que aquele que me pareceu mais realista foi "Agnes Grey" de Anne Bronte.

Podia tecer muitas mais considerações sobre a história ou personagens mas acho que não vale a pena alongar-me. "Jane Eyre" tem indubitavelmente o seu valor como romance Vitoriano e merece a designação de 'clássico' pela qualidade intemporal da história (será provavelmente intemporal até os preconceitos e as diferenças de classe deixarem de existir) e achei que a narrativa flui harmoniosamente através das diversas partes do livro. Jane Eyre é uma personagem interessante pelas suas convicções e a sua aparente indisposição para a submissão... excepto quando se torna submissa por amor.

Mr Rochester não cativa. Claro que não é esse o seu papel (penso que é suposto parecer intratável e rude), mas como a narrativa é na primeira pessoa é difícil perceber o que faz com que Jane se sinta atraída por ele e sinceramente mesmo conhecendo os pormenores da sua vida não vejo como é suposto o leitor desculpar as acções do nosso herói (claro que como a autora nos apresenta alternativas ainda piores para a pobre Jane não podemos deixar de desejar que ela volte para o Mr Rochester).

No geral, uma obra interessante com um mistério gótico bem desenvolvido. As personagens seriam inovadoras para a época mas tendem a não surpreender o leitor actual.

NOTA: Esta é uma opinião inteiramente subjectiva deste livro. Não tem nada a ver com o seu valor literário mas só e apenas com a minha percepção esteja ela certa ou errada.

"O Fim Chega Numa Manhã de Nevoeiro" de Renato Carreira foi a minha primeira obra de fantasia urbana por um autor português. Como sempre, entrei na leitura com expectativas baixas (devido a desilusões passadas e ao facto de ler, maioritariamente, obras do género e por isso conhecer a maioria dos enredos e características inerentes a este tipo de livros).

Felizmente, esta aventura sobrenatural pelas ruas de Lisboa lê-se com facilidade devido à acção quase constante, às personagens caricaturais e ao humor verdadeiramente engraçado (e algo auto-depreciativo).

Baltazar Mendes, inspector da polícia, foi recentemente despedido por motivos de saúde; ou seja, foi corrido da força por ser doido. Ou pelo menos é o que os seus superiores pensam... porque a verdade é que Baltazar está longe de ser maluco e tem apenas a má sorte de se ter associado com um feiticeiro.

Sem emprego e com a sanidade em causa, Baltazar certamente não precisa de mais complicações. Mas quando se conhece um feiticeiro e se tem uma insignificante imunidade ao sobrenatural as complicações vem bater-nos à porta, como o ex-polícia descobre quando se vê envolvido numa conspiração secreta que envolve feiticeiros renegados, uma mão-cheia de vampiros e uma ou outra figura histórica.

"O Fim Chega Numa Manhã de Nevoeiro" é como já disse, um livro que se lê bastante bem e com relativa rapidez. Tenho de confessar que achei a história mal explorada (tudo aconteceu muito depressa e algumas pontas ficaram por atar) e por vezes demasiado inverosímil, mas não é por isso que deixa de ser interessante, com a acção constante e um protagonista sarcástico que é, primeiro que tudo, um "tipo muito normal" e por isso uma personagem com quem o leitor se identifica facilmente.

Gostei também da óbvia brincadeira do autor com as suas personagens. Foi engraçado ver versões tipicamente portuguesas de vampiros e feiticeiros; nem todos são belos e hipnotizantes: alguns têm mau gosto no vestir, no pentear e nem mesmo os vampiros escapam aos problemas dos mortais, como uns quilinhos a mais ou um sinal no meio da cara.

Um dos meus maiores problemas foi mesmo o facto da caracterização não ser muito mais pronunciada no caso das personagens principais do que no das secundárias.

O ponto mais fraco do livro é o enredo. O autor poderia ter feito muito, mas muito mais com a história, mas o que me incomodou mais foi o facto de sermos lançados abruptamente num mundo escondido sem grandes explicações. As experiências iniciais de Baltazar dentro desse mundo são-nos relatadas de forma sucinta, o que não me agradou particularmente; acho que teria tido mais impacto se o livro abrisse com o herói a viver essas experiências.

No geral, este é um livro que irá certamente agradar a leitores que gostam de acção, aventura e alguma fantasia. Não tem uma história propriamente original ou particularmente bem desenvolvida e as personagens precisavam de uma caracterização mais cuidada, mas o ritmo "frenético" (como o descreve o resumo na capa) o humor e a escrita envolvente cativarão os leitores desde a primeira página. Um autor a seguir.

Rae Voight's life is good: she hangs with the popular crowd and she dates the hottest guy in school. But good things don't last and one day Rae starts hearing voices and freaks out.

A few months later she is back at school after a stay in a mental ward. But everything's changed: her old friends are afraid of her and her boyfriend is dating another girl. Rae's old life seems to have vanished. To make matters worse, the voices, the "not-me thoughts" as she calls them are still in her head, haunting her. And she has to go to group therapy. Oh... and someone seems to be after her.

"Echoes" is a bind-up that includes the first three novels in the "Fingerprints" series.

It was another entertaining read. Rae has a supernatural ability that isn't very common in paranormal YA literature and I liked the way the author dealt with it; Rae reacted in a very realistic way when she 'discovered' her 'talent'. Most heroines act all cool and collected and go to libraries to do research; Rae simply thought she was crazy, which is actually a much more human response to the sudden appearance of foreign voices in one's head. It's not a perspective we see explored that much in these kinds of books.

I really liked the male protagonist, Anthony (and yay to the fact that people didn't call him "Tony", ugh). He was also well developed, lifelike. Metz really has a knack for creating intriguing, relatable characters and for making them interact perfectly: I loved the exchanges between Rae and Anthony and their developing relationship was... believable (no insta-love in these books, bonus points for that!). Of course, some of the minor characters (like Jesse and Yana) could have been better developed, but as far as the protagonists go, I can't complain.

The story for the three books is pretty typical of these kinds of novels. There's the girl with the supernatural ability, her mysterious parent (and their equally mysterious past) and a bunch of unknown enemies. Book one, "Echoes" had great pace and was very engaging; but from book 2 the pace slowed way too much and books 2 and 3 didn't have as much story or character development. It is clear the author decided to "stretch" the plot instead of creating a new one for every book. It seems to be a very common occurrence with older YA books, if all these omnibus I've been reading are anything to go by.

Overall I liked the general plot (even if the individual 'book' plots weren't very good) and... behold! A book with a teen romance that gradually develops instead of being 'lurve at first sight'! Refreshing! Recommended for fans of YA paranormal books looking for an interesting, light but realistic read.

Quem me conhece, sabe que uma das principais fontes da minha irritação com o mundo editorial português é o preço dos livros. Actualmente os livros são taxados a 6% e segundo algumas notícias parece que vão continuar a ser, no ano que vem.

No entanto, os livros estão cada vez mais caros.

Nunca foram baratos, certamente. Sempre considerei o livro em Portugal como um luxo, um item a ser comprado uma vez por outra, quando se tem um dinheirinho a mais para gastar. Mas parece-me que as coisas vão de mal a pior, como constatei com surpresa no início desta semana.

Estava eu na FNAC a olhar para as novidades quando um livro me chamou a atenção. Já tinha ouvido falar dele mas como já desisti de comprar livros em português "passou-me ao lado" digamos. Mas como o autor é português e escreve dentro de um género que me agrada decidi dar-lhe uma oportunidade. Pego no livro e viro-o para ver o preço... 16 euros e 96 cêntimos. 17 euros, senhores! Um livro de capa mole, com pouco mais de 200 páginas e de um autor português. Nem sequer há a desculpa de ser mais caro por causa da tradução. Oh, reconheço que é um risco apostar num autor novo, claro, mas não seria mais fácil vender o livro se fosse um bocado mais acessível?

Pronto. Tinha decidido apoiar o autor e por isso acabei por comprar o livro. Enquanto pagava, lembrei-me da encomenda que havia feito no dia anterior, numa loja online estrangeira: dois livros por pouco mais de 12 euros. E ambos com mais páginas do que a obra que acabara de adquirir.

Esta é a razão pela qual, se puder, não compro livros em português. Não estou propriamente a fazer um boicote, mas apesar das traduções e campanhas publicitárias custarem dinheiro; apesar das nossas edições terem alguma qualidade e apesar das nossas editoras serem bastante mais pequenas do que as estrangeiras, ainda assim acho que o preço dos livros é... bem, uma roubalheira. Pelo que, sempre que posso (quase sempre) compro em inglês.

Ah pois, mas nem toda a gente sabe ler em inglês, dizem-me vocês. A sério? Eu antes também não sabia. Mas como não sou rica achei que era útil aprender e toca de comprar livros em inglês até os conseguir ler sem problemas.

Mas... mas... as editoras estão a fazer um esforço!! Agora até já têm edições de bolso!!

Ah sim? Edições de bolso que custam mais de dez euros? Belo progresso! Pois se eu compro livros estrangeiros de capa dura que definitivamente não são edições de bolso, na sua maioria a menos de dez euros! Porque é que hei-de me incomodar com as excessivamente caras edições de bolso portuguesas?

Compreendo que não sejam rentáveis (ainda) este tipo de livros, uma vez que os leitores portugueses, segundo consta, franzem o nariz aos livros de bolso. Mas se as editoras decidissem publicar a maioria dos seus livros neste formato (especialmente quando se trata de novos autores, que é sempre mais arriscado porque nunca se sabe como é que o público vai reagir) decerto que as pessoas se haviam de habituar. Desde que não sejam edições de bolso a 10 euros, claro. Se calhar é por isso que as pessoas não compram... digo eu.

Poder-se-á dizer também que os custos da publicidade fazem com que os livros sejam mais caros. A isto respondo: sejam criativas, editoras! Aproveitem veículos como as redes sociais e os blogues dedicados aos livros! É o que fazem as editoras estrangeiras, com um sucesso razoável.

Enfim. Confesso que não sei muito sobre o mundo editorial e certamente posso estar a dizer uma data de parvoíces, mas pelo que tenho visto, as editoras portuguesas não parecem gostar de arriscar (tirando uma ou outra). Continuam a publicar no formato tradicional que parece ser bastante mais dispendioso. O resultado? Bem, adivinhem. Estamos no meio de uma crise, poucos são os livros que custam menos de 16 euros (será que ainda há algum?). Parece-me que entre comida e livros a escolha é óbvia.

E vocês o que acham? Concordam? Discordam? Estariam dispostos a dar uma oportunidade aos livros de bolso, se as editoras decidissem começar a publicar a maioria dos livros neste formato? Que ideias têm para diminuir os custos de tradução e publicidade dos livros? :)

Let's see if I can piece together some sort of review for this book. But I must warn you now: it's not going to be objective and I suspect it is more of a rant then a review.

Imagine that you're a 17-year-old, completely average and normal American girl who just happens to have a fun but somewhat crazy [favourite] aunt. Said aunt decides suddenly to leave her New York flat and the next thing you (the teenager) and your family know she is dead.

Then an envelope comes for you (annoyingly little and blue) and it's from your aunt and she wants you to grab the 1000 dollars in the envelope and buy a ticket to London. And you just... go. Why? I don't know. A letter comes for you, out-of-the-blue asking you, a teenager, to go from America to Europe with only a backpack and a set of written instructions.

I'm sure everyone must have realized what the problem with this entire story line is. Yep. I doubt there are many parents out there who would let their teenage daughter just catch a plane to Europe with no money, barely any clothes and no cell phone. What? I mean, what? I just didn't buy it. And the fact thar there was no conversation between the main character (Ginny) and her parents at all didn't make it any better, obviously.

Still this is fiction. This is teen fiction. I was willing to suspend my disbelief at this completely wacky plot line. Maybe something interesting would happen.

But it didn't. The entire book is just about Ginny (Virginia) who is possibly one of the most dull protagonists ever (just like Finley, remember her?) running around all over Europe with a backpack, very little cash and no maps. I could suspend my disbelief no longer; 13 Little Blue Envelopes just didn't work. It was implausible, random and in spite of all the descriptions of European cities, boring.

Any self-respecting person, teenager or not would be annoyed that their aunt was apparently making them travel all over for no discernible or logical reason, but not Ginny. Since she is dull, as I mentioned above and just devoid of any personality whatsoever she meekly followed all the crazy instructions in the various envelopes and I was honestly surprised she didn't get lost and/or wasn't repeatedly robbed or beaten up for the contents of her backpack.

Johnson's descriptions of Europe are flawed, as if it is some sort of magical land where nothing wrong ever happens. Oh, sure, Ginny has some problems but somehow they get solved in the most fantastic and unrealistic ways: like, when she didn't have a place to stay, an American family just happened to find her and invite her to stay with them.

Of course, no teen novel is complete without a romantic interest. Ginny falls for Keith, an English wannabe-actor (at first sight, of course). They keep running into each other (either because they're going the same way or because he decides to show up where she is, at random, as if traveling through Europe costs no money at all) but don't ever know each other very well. But they are still in luurve.

In the end there was no point to the whole exercise. Ginny traveled, met a few people and went back home. She didn't change much (or if she did, we're never told).

Overall: this book was... not very good. It was pointless, dull and random. The main character was not interesting at all, her quest was annoyingly vapid and unrealistic and in the end nothing changed. The whole setting was too implausible for words. When I compare this book to the recent YA paranormal fiction I read and find the fantasy books more believable than this one then something is definitely wrong. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone, teenagers or adults. There is just too much in this book that doesn't work.

Neste segundo volume da série "Sweep" ou "Wicca", que agrega os livros 4, 5 e 6, continuamos a seguir as aventuras de Morgan Rowlands uma bruxa de sangue cujo clã - os Woodbane - tinha dos bruxos mais negros da história até alguns se terem reformado.

Mas se alguns Woodbane se reformaram o mesmo não se pode dizer de outros. Traída pelo seu namorado Cal, também ele um Woodbane, Morgan tem agora de aprender a viver com o facto de ter sido enganada. Tem também de tentar resistir à perigosa atracção que sente por Hunter, um Caçador de magos negros enviado pelo Concelho Internacional das Bruxas para apanhar Cal e a sua mãe, Selene. E ainda com o perigo que a própria Selene representa, pois esta impiedosa bruxa quer o poder de Morgan e fará tudo para o conseguir.

Devem estar a perguntar-se porque é que esta opinião está em português. Bem, na verdade, achei que seria um livro apelativo para os leitores nacionais, uma vez que tem elementos em comum com a saga Harry Potter (da britânica J.K. Rowling) e com os livros do Círculo Secreto da L.J. Smith (podem consultar a minha opinião desta série aqui) para já não falar com as parecenças que tem com Hex Hall de Rachel Hawkins. E além disso já escrevi uma mini-opinião do primeiro volume.

Esta série de Cate Tiernan constitui uma leitura agradável. O primeiro volume foi interessante porque Morgan descobre que é uma bruxa e começa a praticar feitiços e a fazer poções e cremes, mas neste segundo temos um incremento no nível da acção que irá certamente agradar aos leitores. O romance entre Morgan e Hunter também se desenvolve de forma mais gradual e realista do que o que temos no primeiro volume.

O segundo volume traz também o culminar do enredo que vem já a desenvolver-se desde o primeiro livro. Aliás, penso que estes seis livros, bem editados podiam perfeitamente ser transformados apenas num, uma vez que lidam com a mesma história. Se tivesse comprado estes livros em separado (cada um com as suas 150 páginas) ter-me-ia sentido algo burlada pois cada uma das obras é muito pequena e não tem história suficiente para que o leitor se sinta satisfeito com a sua leitura (é necessário lê-los a todos para que haja um final definido).

No geral, este livro foi interessante. Gostei da forma como a autora explorou o seu 'sistema de magia' e o mundo da Wicca. As personagens não são particularmente memoráveis mas também não são do tipo de protagonistas que nos irritam. Recomendado para fans de séries como Hex Hall e mesmo Harry Potter (apesar dos livros de Cate Tiernan não serem tão complexos ao nível da história e das personagens).

Mini-Review: just like the first, this second bind-up was... entertaining. Still don't know how the author managed to sell each book as a stand alone. There is just not enough 'story' in any of the three books contained in this omnibus to make for a satisfying solo read.

Segunda edição da rubrica Waiting on Wednesday. O objectivo é evidenciar futuros lançamentos, livros pelos quais espero ansiosamente. Antes de aderir a esta rubrica "oficial", fazia o mesmo com o "Esperando por...".

Foi difícil escolher um livro para apresentar esta semana, porque de repente parece que os livros interessantes andam a nascer como cogumelos. Enfim, é a desvantagem de ter as listas de futuros lançamentos vários meses antes das obras saírem. Este chamou-me a atenção (Orgulho e Preconceito meets O Retrato de Dorian Grey? Como resistir?). :)

Harry, especialmente, passa por uma fase bastante difícil que testa o seu carisma enquanto personagem principal. Como bom adolescente de 15 anos que é, Harry torna-se mais volúvel e parece explodir com facilidade. Isto, claro, tem uma explicação mágica que vai para além do facto do nosso protagonista estar na fase mais complicada da adolescência.

A história do livro foca-se nas reacções do mundo dos feiticeiros à notícia de que Voldemort está de novo activo. Como seria de esperar, a maioria das pessoas não quer acreditar na possibilidade de um novo conflito. Rowling explora com mestria este posicionamento e as crenças a associadas. A resposta do Ministério da Magia às afirmações de Dumbledore, a subtil (pelo menos de início) mudança de regime, as implicações políticas. Tudo isto contribui para um enredo mais elaborado, mais sério e mais adulto. É claro que Harry e os seus companheiros irão ter bastantes aventuras e aprender magia.

Mas é neste volume que se explora a fundo o mundo dos feiticeiros.

A Ordem da Fénix traz também algumas revelações importantes para a história da saga.

No geral, mais uma óptima leitura e uma excelente continuação do volume anterior.

You know those books that are so beautiful you just have to have them? Yep, "Possess" by Gretchen McNeil is one of those. The cover is gorgeous, with its shimmering blue color, the graphic work on the model's face, the simple but elegant lettering. I am a sucker for a pretty cover (lol). And since the story itself seemed quite gripping - not to mention the fact that lots of people seem to have loved the book - I thought I should give it a try. So I bought this.

It was a decent first effort, I'll recognize as much. And bonus points to the author for not falling into the usual romantic clichés: the insta-love and the love triangle. Plus, the idea was interesting enough, I suppose.

But (yes, there are a few buts)... it wasn't as good as it could have been. As I was reading, the word "disjointed" kept flashing in my mind. It's a good word to describe this book I think. There are too many random things happening in the book, situations seem to happen out of order or for no discernable reason and the characters are developed weirdly, in a way that makes them seem like completely different people in the end. No, I don't mean that they grow and develop, I mean they do things that are almost... out of character.

The plot was pretty predictable (the villain? Yeah, I knew who he was early on), even if the reader basically 'crashes' into the middle of the story and is treated to a few flashbacks that explain certain things that happened before. Basically, Bridget Liu has some strange 'powers' and is being coached on how to use them by a priest. Of course, as the book opens Bridget already dealt with all these issues so she's a ready-made heroine that jumps into the action five pages in. This did not work for me. It would have worked better if the book started with Bridget discovering her powers or if Bridget had known about them all along.

The way we're introduced to McNeil's (or Bridget's) world is too abrupt. The relationships and dynamics between all the important characters are already established (except for Father Santos) in a way that just didn't sit well with me. Alright, so it didn't bother me very much when I was reading about Hector's and Bridget's friendship because after all, all teenagers have friends. It did bother me in the case of Bridget and Matt's relationship or Bridget and Monsignor Renault. These should have been explored differently.

Another aspect that kind of ruined the book for me: the romance. Okay, I said there was no insta-love, yes, but it was still a very 'out of the blue' kind of thing... Bridget goes from thinking her love interest is slightly annoying to loving him (yes, love).

Overall: "Possess" was by no means a bad read, but I was expecting more. It was, as I mentioned before, a little disjointed and even a bit hard to get into. Some scenes seemed random, the story was predictable and the supernatural aspects could have been better explored. The characters' behaviour was a bit odd at times, they almost seemed OOC if that makes sense. The romance was not very well developed. An average read that will nonetheless appeal to fans of paranormal young adult novels.

Average. I've read my share of Pride and Prejudice retellings, adaptations and sequels and "Epic Fail" was just... average. Not exactly good but not bad either. A nice read, but not particularly engaging.

Elise and Juliana Benton start at a new school, Coral Tree Prep, where her mother just happens to be the principal. They're surrounded by rich kids and celebrities but even there one stands above all: Derek Edwards, son of two Hollywood stars. He is gorgeous, he is popular and he's... an idiot.

Or that is what Elise thinks anyway. While she recognizes he is hot, she also sees what no-one else seems to: that Derek is a horrible snob and thinks he's all that. People may be fooled by his fortune and status but Elise is too level-headed for that... she sees things as they really are. Or does she?

Claire LaZebnik's main goal, as made clear by the tone of this book, was to write a retelling of "Pride and Prejudice" the famous and beloved classic by British 19th century author Jane Austen. LaZebnik changed the time, place and some of the situations to fit the era, but the way I see it she seemed to intend for her characters to have the same basic personality and strengths of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy.

That is where, and pardon my pun (is this a pun, even?), the author failed epically. I think she did a relatively good job at constructing her world and adapting the story to fit modern settings; but her characters Elise and Derek lacked the spark and energy of the ones they were modeled after. The romance lacked the chemistry and tension of the original work.

Being "Pride and Prejudice" mostly a character-driven novel that made all the difference. LaZebnik's attempt falls short, very short. It's simply not captivating and the characters don't have the wit and the charm they should have for the book to actually work.

Overall, I thought "Epic Fail" succeeded in being a fluffy, cute teen romance novel but the characters are weak and not very charismatic. That made the entire book much less interesting than it should have been. The story needs strong protagonists and the author wasn't able to write them, I think. But if you're looking for a light YA romance this book will certainly appeal to you. Still I'd advise reading the original (can you tell I'm a big Pride and Prejudice fangirl?).

I'm not sure if I'm just not in the mood to write reviews or whether there is something about this book that makes it difficult to write about it. A bit of both, maybe. The bottom line is that I can't seem to put my thoughts in order and write something about this book.

I liked it well enough, I suppose. It was an easy enough read; Melissa Marr can definitely entice a reader through her writing, yes and also with her ideas and concepts. Because I simply loved the concept of this book. It's not that it's completely original - actually I was reminded of Anna Dressed in Blood as I read this - but the entire setting is intriguing. That is what made me buy this book in the first place.

But... I didn't like how Marr explored her idea. I thought she just wanted to put too much into the book: troubled pasts, mysterious rites, failed loves, tragic happenings, a murder/ mystery plot and a great secret; not to mention several characters that required a lot of development (such as Charles). The overall concept required a lot of layering and world-building and I don't feel like the author achieved this. I thought the world-building was shallow (in part because of the fact that so much was crammed into the book) and the story was way too character-driven, when it shouldn't be.

So I finished the book and felt... unsatisfied. There was so much I was looking forward to know that was never answered.
The mystery was not very well explored and the romantic subplot took way too much spotlight when there were so many other interesting things happening. The fact that the male protagonist lacked character and the female heroine was annoying most of the time only made it worse: not even the romance was interesting because I didn't particularly like the characters and because I wanted to read about the other stuff like the Graveminders powers and why were all the ghosts under the city (much like in Ghost Whisperer, actually); who was Charles really and what was the 'Underworld' presented in the book. Why could Abigail do what she did? These were the things that really interested me... not Rebekkah and her romantic woes.

Overall: Yet again, we have one of those "great concept but poor execution" kind of books (I should probably create a shelf for those, they are 'piling up', so to speak). It read like the author's YA books, the only difference being that it had a little more nudity. But like hers (and most) YA series it focuses on the romance rather than the supernatural plot, which wasn't especially thrilling for me because she didn't even do it right... Rebekkah and Byron spent most of the book whining about how they loved each other but couldn't be together. Very dramatic and... well, annoying.

If you liked Melissa Marr's "Wicked Lovely" series, you'll like this. However, if you read the synopsis and thought the idea interesting I would thread carefully; this is more paranormal romance than urban fantasy. A somewhat disappointing read.

"Esperando Por", "Waiting on Wednesday"... no fundo sempre foi a mesma coisa. Por isso é que decidi aderir ao "Waiting on Wednesday", o 'meme' oficial, criado pela autora do blogue Breaking the Spine. A única diferença é que em vez de postar à segunda (quando me lembrar) posto à quarta. Mas o "Waiting on Wednesday" continuará a ser, tal como o "Esperando por", uma rubrica onde apresento livros que estou ansiosa por ler.

O livro desta semana deverá ser eventualmente traduzido para português (penso eu), uma vez que é o segundo de uma série que já começou a ser editada pela Saída de Emergência. Como gostei bastante de Celestial - podem ler o quanto a obra me surpreendeu aqui - estou ansiosa por ler a continuação. Espero, no entanto, que a SdE adopte as capas originais que são bem bonitas.

A autora americana L.J. Smith é actualmente bastante conhecida, especialmente por causa d'Os Diários do Vampiro, a sua série top de vendas (que foi já transformada numa série de TV) sobre dois irmãos vampiros e... uma rapariga. Foi por esta razão que decidi escrever esta opinião em português, apesar dos livros não estarem ainda traduzidos para a nossa língua. No entanto, com a estreia da série de TV e a relativa popularidade da autora em Portugal, penso que é apenas uma questão de tempo até esta trilogia, The Secret Circle, estar disponível nas nossas livrarias. E se não for este o caso, bem, pelo menos saberão o que penso da escrita da autora.

"The Secret Circle", cujos livros foram publicados pela primeira vez no início dos anos 90 (e nota-se: menções a "walkmans" e vídeos são comuns) conta a história de Cassandra (Cassie) Blake, uma adolescente vulgar que vê a sua vida mudar drasticamente quando a sua mãe lhe diz que têm de se mudar da Califórnia para a Nova Inglaterra para cuidar da avó que está doente. Cassie sente-se traída por ser obrigada a mudar de casa e principalmente de escola; num drama bem conhecido, a maior preocupação de Cassie é o facto de ir ter de "começar tudo de novo" numa nova escola.

Mas quando chega a New Salem, a cidade onde vive a avó, Cassie percebe que algo de estranho se está a passar. A escola secundária parece estar dominada por um grupo de juvens (o infame e misterioso "Clube") que assustam não apenas os alunos mas mesmo os professores. E Faye, a bela e maldosa líder não gosta nada de Cassie...

O meu maior problema com esta trilogia foi... exactamente o facto de ser uma trilogia. Depois de terminar a leitura, senti que estes três livros podiam muito facilmente ter sido transformados apenas num. Na verdade o enredo é tão simplista ao longo dos livros que penso que só há realmente história suficiente para um livro.

A autora podia ter feito muito mais com a história... mas não fez. O enredo está bastante mal desenvolvido e foca-se, a meu ver, demasiado em dramas adolescentes 'normais' em vez de no aspecto que deveria ser o mais importante: o facto de Cassie e os membros do "clube" serem bruxas. Apesar de ser, aparentemente, este o fio condutor da história, está mal explorado. Oh, a história está construída em volta deste facto, sim, mas Smith perde-se um pouco com questões como os amores de Cassie e as relações de Cassie com rapazes e coisas do género. Sim, percebo que este tipo de coisas são importantes na vida de uma adolescente; mas isso não desculpa a pouca atenção dispensada ao enredo principal.

As personagens são bastante típicas deste tipo de livro: Cassie é tímida e modesta, mas poderosa. Adam e Nick são ambos atraentes e formam a base do triângulo amoroso. Faye é a típica rapariga mazinha e todos os outros representam um qualquer tipo de estereotipo: a rapariga sabichona (a la Hermione), a rapariga popular e bela e boazinha, o rapaz medricas, os rapazes rebeldes, etc, etc.

No geral? Esta série não me impressionou. Nunca tinha lido nada da autora e não tinha qualquer tipo de expectativas, mas achei que o enredo era muito fraquito e que a autora podia ter explorado muito melhor os elementos sobrenaturais da história. Falado um bocado mais de Salém, das bruxas e do seu "sistema de magia" por assim dizer. É que as personagens, apesar de serem bruxas não fazem grandes feitiços ou magia.

Achei também que tanto a história como as personagens eram muito estereotipados: temos o triângulo amoroso, as personagens mal desenvolvidas e o "amor ardente à primeira vista", mas considerando a época em que os livros foram escritos - muito antes da explosão de popularidade do género da fantasia contemporânea/ urbana - penso que é compreensível. Provavelmente não era assim tão cliché como é actualmente.

Pelo que já vi da série de TV, penso que há potencial na história... mas os livros precisariam de um maior desenvolvimento em termos de enredo e personagens para serem realmente interessantes. Mesmo assim foram leituras leves e divertidas.

Mini-Reviews: Once Dead, Twice Shy + Sweep

Bem... esta nova rubrica (se é que se pode chamar a isto rubrica) foi descaradamente 'gamada' à Jen do Cuidado com o Dálmata. É que no outro dia estava a ler as Mini-Opiniões dela e pensei que até seria engraçado fazer o mesmo, ou seja, dar apenas algumas impressões gerais sobre os alguns dos livros que leio. Isto porque alguns dos livros que leio são muito "blah" ('tão a ver?) e não sei bem o que escrever sobre eles a não ser que foram... erm... leituras mais ou menos agradáveis.

Daí ter decidido aproveitar a ideia da Jen. Depois digam-me o que acham. Opiniões in english e português. :D

Once Dead, Twice Shy

Mini Review: The beginning of the book is seriously bad and I am a bit peeved that I paid the same for this 200-page short story as I'd have paid for a full hardcover novel. It seemed to me like the author could have started the story with Madison's death and it's circumstances instead of simply telling us about it in a short prologue that takes place 6 months after this huge event. It would have added up to a full-length novel if only she had done that and had not decided to just plunge us readers into her world.

Still, I see potencial, I think. Although Madison seems a bit like a younger version of Rachel Morgan and Grace reminded me of Jenks, both character's from Harrison's adult urban fantasy series.

Mini Opinião: O meu problema com este livro começou mesmo no início uma vez que os primeiros capítulos não me puxaram muito. Penso que a autora poderia ter começado a história com uma explicação detalhada dos acontecimentos que levaram às circunstâncias em que Madison se encontra em vez de nos apresentar apenas um pequeno prólogo (que se passa seis meses depois) com pouca ou nenhuma informação. O livro ficaria muito mais completo se o leitor tivesse acesso directo às experiências da protagonista; em vez disso somos atirados de cabeça para o seu mundo e não nos é dada muita informação.
Fiquei, confesso, um pouco irritada por ter pago o preço normal para um livro de capa dura (hardcover) e ter recebido um livrito de 200 e tal páginas que me pareceu mais um conto do que uma 'novela completa'.

No entanto, penso que a história geral tem potencial; mesmo sendo Madison uma versão mais jovem de Rachel Morgan (a protagonista da série Hollows, publicada em Portugal pela Saída de Emergência) e Grace uma versão feminina de Jenks (também uma personagem da série acima mencionada).

Mini Review: Hmm... it wasn't bad, but it was not great either. The writing is rather blah and Morgan (the main character) is pretty boring - and a bit dumb - most of the time. Nothing much happens in the three books compiled in this omnibus, except in the final pages. The pace is off too. Not to mention the insta-love was annoying and even more unrealistic than usual. It was a bit of a chore to read a book about such a dull character as Morgan. But it was, overall, interesting enough to make me want to read Volume 2.

Mini-Opinião: Bem... não se pode dizer que "Sweep" tenha sido um livro... mau, mas também não foi assim muito bom. A escrita é mediana e Morgan (a protagonista) é bastante aborrecida - e mesmo algo burrinha - durante a maior parte da obra. Apesar deste volume juntar os três primeiros livros, não acontece grande coisa em termos de desenvolvimento da história; tudo se passa muito devagar, como que em câmara-lenta. A parte romântica do enredo é típica dos livros juvenis (os protagonistas apaixonam-se à primeira vista) mas consegue ser ainda mais irrealista do que o normal, se tal é possível.
Mesmo com todas estas falhas "Sweep" foi uma leitura suficientemente interessante para me fazer querer continuar a ler esta série.

Lançamentos Fantásticos - 1001 Mundos

A 1001 Mundos vai editar em Outubro duas obras de que gostei bastante: Goddess of the Sea (Deusa do Mar) de PC Cast e Blood Magic (Magia de Sangue) - leiam a minha opinião em inglês - de Tessa Gratton. Achei que era digno de menção. A obra de PC Cast é o primeiro livro de uma série sobre mulheres comuns que, devido às mais variadas circunstâncias ganham os poderes de deusas antigas. São, claro, Romances Paranormais. Blood Magic conta a história de uma jovem que descobre que é uma bruxa. O universo construído por Tessa Gratton é fascinante neste livro. E pronto, aqui ficam sugestões para os amantes de Romance Paranormal e/ou Lit Juvenil Sobrenatural.

"Anna Dressed in Blood" is one of those books that are ridiculously difficult to review. Mainly because I not only had high expectations but I actually liked it. But that doesn't mean I didn't notice some problems with plot and character development. And so I am a bit at a loss on how to give an opinion.

This book tells the story of Cas Lowood, a young ghost hunter. These ghosts, however can do a lot more than just rattle chains; they can take some kind of corporeal form and actually interfere with the living. So, since Cal has a special gift that allows him to "kill the dead" (or more accurately send them somewhere else) he travels around seeking ghosts who mean harm to people. When one of his contacts tells him about a particularly vicious ghost, Cal just knows he has to take the job.

As he encounters Anna, dubbed "Anna Dressed in Blood" by the locals, he understands that she's no ordinary ghost. His journey will bring answers about his past but also more questions about who he really is, about his powers and about the righteousness of his work.

If anyone asked me for a quick opinion on this book I'd say that it was good. Pretty good, actually. It has great pace, most of the time, it has some horror (it is rather creepy sometimes) and interesting protagonists. So would I recommend it? Sure. If you like action, mystery and a bit of Supernatural-style horror, "Anna Dressed in Blood" is the book for you.

But is it very good? Like "Chime" good? Not really. Oh, the story is definitely engaging. It makes you want to keep reading, it keeps you on the edge of your seat and Anna is a very intriguing and multi-layered character. However... Blake wasn't completely able to step away from the usual cliches that plague the genre [of YA supernatural fiction].

The romance was badly developed and unrealistic (it bordered on insta-romance, yuck) and there were some inconsistency problems. The one that bugged me the most was the fact that Cas' mother seemed perfectly okay with her son following in his father's footsteps when it was exactly his father's job that got him killed. It just didn't make sense to me. I can see why the author wrote it like that, sure, but I still don't feel like it was very realistic behavior.

Cal himself was another problem. He isn't particularly stereotyped as far as male protagonists go; but he didn't read like a boy. Probably because the book was written by a woman. Always a risk, writing a male character and frankly I don't think the author pulled it off very well.

Overall: "Anna Dressed in Blood" does stand out in this genre (which is praise-worthy indeed) and I really enjoyed reading it. But it was not without flaws. Recommended to fans of supernatural stories who aren't afraid of a few (seriously) creepy scenes.
