After the "Morganville Vampires" marathon I was longing for something I could read and be done with. Texas Gothic, a stand alone novel about a family of witches was a good choice. It has a definite end and it's enjoyable.

I liked the book, overall, but it wasn't an outstanding read. Amy is the typical 'black sheep' of the family because while all the others are witches and psychics she is "normal" and is somewhat embarrassed when her family starts acting... witchy. Typically Amy only wants to lead a normal, non-magical life.

But when her aunt asks her and her sister Phin to take care of her ranch, Amy will find herself involved in paranormal events that will follow her... whether she wants to or not.

The mystery with the ghost was pretty typical, nothing special. I did like the way the author was developing things gradually, but then she rushed everything in the last chapters and that made the ending kind of anticlimatic and nonsensical. Amy was all bent on being a sleuth but she ended up not doing that much investigation.

I liked the chemistry between Amy and Ben, it was really good and it seemed it was also going to be a gradual sort of relationship, until it... wasn't. But hey, at least it wasn't insta-love.

I got the feeling the author was taking her time developing her story and her characters but then it was like she just got tired of writing and decided on an abrupt end, which was kind of bad. So this book could have been really entertaining, but it was just mildly interesting.

Overall, Texas Gothic was a good read. I liked the characters (Phin was my favorite, she was great), the mystery and the whole history around it was cool, and the world and story building were great at first. I really liked the fact that it involved anthropology and digs and it also mentioned how people see digging of old cemeteries. But the ending was disappointing. A recommended read for lovers of paranormal mysteries.

This book (which is actually two books, "Lord of Misrule" and "Carpe Corpus") neatly wraps up the current story 'arc' in the Morganville vampire series.

In book 4 (or if you want to be technical, at the end of book 3), Mr. Bishop, Amelie's vampire (and apparently real as well) father appeared in Morganville for reasons mostly unknown (still) and promptly started to create havoc. He dethroned Amelie and turned Morganville into a mini-dictatorship.

These books, just like the first four are consistently ok-ish. Which should be a deterrent for me to keep buying the rest of the series. But somehow it isn't. That is mostly because while Caine likes to make readers think they have bought a full novel when in fact they've bought a short-story, she does know how to write a book in a way that will keep you hooked. She has, for the lack of a better word or expression, a great sense of pacing. Her books may lack content, proper character, story and world development but they are very (and I mean very) well paced.

That is the series' strongest point. As for characters? Still mostly walking clichés and not nearly as well developed as they should be by book 6 in a series. Some of them were so stereotypical I just had to roll my eyes at them... like Mr Bishop... he was a "mwahaha, I'm so evil" sort of villain. No depth.

The story was stretched by six books when it could have been told in two (or for marketing reasons... make it a trilogy).

The world building is weak at best, with many questions still unanswered and some inconsistencies popping up from book to book. Like, at first Amelie was the oldest vampire in the book/world and then Mr Bishop appeared out of nowhere and he is possibly the oldest... the justification for this was murky at best but mostly, just plain unbelievable.

Overall, this series is, as I said before, consistently mediocre. Which isn't very flattering. But! But it's one of those series that will keep you reading because the pacing is great, the writing is good enough and the core idea is interesting... and you're always hoping the author finally develops her world and explains things. Recommended for light, beach reading. Not the best YA series ever, but I've read worse. It's... ok.

Curtas: The Morganville Vampires (2-4)

Sabem quando lêem um livro e vos sabe a pouco? Foi exactamente o que me aconteceu ao ler os livros 2, 3 e 4 da série "The Morganville Vampires". Se leram a minha opinião do primeiro livro, devem ter reparado que mencionei que o livro tinha "pouco conteúdo". Pensei que fosse por ser o primeiro e um livro introdutório. Mas não. 

Os primeiros quatro livros da série são quase contos. Depois de espremidos não há... lá está, conteúdo suficiente quase para um livro quanto mais para quatro. A autora dá-nos mais um bocadinho da história geral (o enredo que corre por todos os livros) mas elabora muito pouco acerca do mundo de Morganville.

As personagens continuam a ser estereotipadas e muito pouco interessantes, se bem que tenho de concordar com outros leitores e dizer que se tivesse de escolher uma personagem favorita seria o Myrnin, que me parece ter um pouco de profundidade.

Estranhamente, apesar de pouco ou nada se passar nestes três livros e da progressão do enredo ser praticamente nula, foram leituras relativamente rápidas e agradáveis.

Mini Review: Um segundo livro mais interessante do que o primeiro, apesar de ser igualmente pequeno e fraco em relação ao conteúdo. 

The Dead Girl's Dance começa quase no mesmo instante em que acaba Glasse Houses, sendo uma continuação directa (uma vez que o final de Glass Houses é do mais aberto que há, o leitor é 'ejectado' a meio da acção).

Uma leitura rápida mas pouco memorável.

Mini Review: Mais uma vez, lê-se como um conto e a única personagem com algum desenvolvimento é a Claire (o Shane podia ir viver para a China, que por mim não se perdia nada). Mas há algo de intrigante na história. Algo que nos faz continuar a ler (a autora parece ser pro nisso). Talvez seja o facto de ser fantasia com vampiros e magia mas de alguma forma fazer sentido. Se é que isto faz sentido.

Partes da intriga parecem interessantes mas outras espero que estejam resolvidas o mais depressa possível porque não parecem acrescentar nada à história. Até agora o que me faz continuar a ler é mesmo o imaginário de Morganville.

Mini Review: O mesmo problema de sempre; quase não há história. 

O quarto livro arrasta o enredo principal ainda mais e a autora decidiu adicionar ainda mais personagens (que parecem não ter um propósito aparente). Os vampiros começam a parecer-se demasiado com os da série Anita Blake (todos muito 'jogos de poder' e 'vamos humilhar os humanos'), algo de que não gostei. Foi um livro com tão pouco conteúdo como os anteriores mas a autora não conseguiu disfarçar este facto tão bem desta vez. 

As personagens continuam a ser pouco desenvolvidas apesar de muitas das páginas do livro estarem cheias dos típicos conflitos adolescentes que povoam este género de obras.

O mais fraco dos quatro.
