Curtas: Girl of Nightmares e Croak

Girl of Nightmares
Autor: Kendare Blake
Série: Anna, #2
Editor: Tor Teen - 2012
Páginas: 336
Mini-Review: Nesta sequela do livro Anna Dressed in Blood voltamos a encontrar o nosso herói, Cas.

Phew, coitados! Mas aqui ficam os livrinhos! E recebi, "Girl of Nightmares" a sequela de "Anna Dressed in Blood"! Yes!

Review: Wicked Becomes You (Meredith Duran)

Wicked Becomes You by Meredith Duran
Publisher: Pocket Books (2010)
Format: Mass Market Paperback | 402 pages
Genre(s): Historical Romance
Description (GR): "She’s been burned not once but twice by London’s so-call ed gentlemen . . .
Gwen Maudsley is pretty enough to be popular, and plenty wealthy, too. But what she’s best known and loved for is being so very, very nice. When a cad jilts her at the altar—again—the scandal has her outraged friends calling for blood. Only Gwen has a different plan. If nice no longer works for her, then it’s time to learn to be naughty. Happily, she knows the perfect tutor—Alexander Ramsey, her late brother’s best friend and a notorious rogue.
So why won’t a confirmed scoundrel let her be as bad as she wants to be?
Unbeknownst to Gwen, Alex’s aloof demeanor veils his deepest unspoken desire. He has no wish to see her change, nor to tempt himself with her presence when his own secrets make any future between them impossible. But on a wild romp from Paris to the Riviera, their friendship gives way to something hotter, darker, and altogether more dangerous. With Alex’s past and Gwen’s newly unleashed wildness on a collision course, Gwen must convince Alex that his wickedest intentions are exactly what she needs."
Historical romances are usually light, fluffy reads. That's why I read them, at least. They are fun, the heroes are tortured but somewhat progressive (so they are able to take the sass of our female protagonists) and the heroines are cute, innocent but also very sure of themselves. Most of all, there's a "happy ever after". It's like a fairy tail for adults.

That said, most historical romances while mostly focused on the romance also show us a glimpse of life in other times. Sure, it's not very historically accurate and the society, politics and economics of the period are not the focus, but there's always something to learn.

And then there are historical romances like Wicked Becomes You. Who give you romance, some historical background (it seemed quite well researched, actually, but then I'm not an expert) and great (and I mean great, great) characters.

Gwen is a very rich heiress but her parents were of common origins. Her origins are still important at the end of the 19th century (1890, when this book takes place) even though land and agriculture aren't viable money making sources anymore. Gentry and nobility alike are up to their necks in debt and business men are on the rise. Still, members of high society still look at "self-made men" as only a necessary evil. At the same time, these business men want to achieve social status so they try to marry into the nobility.

This is the foundation of this book. In this confusing time of Victorian strictness but also of suffragettes, our heroine was trained to be the perfect model of the Victorian female: demure, decorative, always smiling at everyone...

But after she is jilted twice, she decides that enough is enough. She will be wild. She will be free. And the entire journey of self-discovery Gwen goes through is fascinating. Bred to be proper, always, it's difficult for her to overcome her education. To admit her desires. To gain self-confidence.

Duran paints a vivid portrait of the period through description and the struggles of both her hero and her heroine.

I loved the whole book. It would have been a 5 star book except it took a while to "kick off" and those first pages were a bit boring. And the resolution felt rushed and confusing.

Overall an engaging and interesting read. Wicked Becomes You has a lot of plot lines but they blended seamlessly and I liked it. The characters had chemistry and were properly developed. The romance was layered and realistically gradual. Recommended.

Waiting on Wednesday (11)

"The Casual Vacancy" de J.K. Rowling.

The Casual Vacancy - J.K. Rowling
Editora: Little, Brown
Data de Publicação: 27 de Setembro de 2012
Páginas: 512
Idioma: Inglês
Descrição (GR): "When Barry Fairbrother dies in his early forties, the town of Pagford is left in shock.
Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war.
Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils…Pagford is not what it first seems.
And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations?
A big novel about a small town, The Casual Vacancy is J.K. Rowling’s first novel for adults. It is the work of a storyteller like no other."
Waiting on Wednesday is hosted by Breaking the Spine.

Opinião: Grita (Laurie Halse Handerson)

Grita by Laurie Halse Handerson
Editora: Asa (2012)
Formato: Capa mole | 176 páginas
Géneros: Lit. Juvenil

E a toda a gente, vá.

Review: Much Ado About Magic (Shanna Swendson)

Much Ado About Magic by Shanna Swendson
Publisher: NLA Digital Liaison Platform (2012)
Format: e-book | 235 pages
Genre(s): Paranormal Romance, Chick Lit
Description (GR): "Katie Chandler is back in New York and at Magic, Spells, and Illusions, Inc. – and just in time. The city’s in the grip of a magical crime wave from spells that wizarding whiz Owen Palmer thinks look awfully familiar, and the rogue firm Spellworks is raising its profile in the magical world by selling protective amulets. It’s Katie’s job as the new director of marketing for MSI to fight this battle of public perception while Owen and the other wizards try to uncover what’s really going on.
What Katie doesn’t realize is that her idea to stage a showcase for MSI’s magical achievements is playing right into a devious plot more than three decades in the making. Now Katie has to do damage control that has nothing to do with marketing. To save the magical world, she’ll have to prove who the real enemy is, and doing that will require digging deeper into Owen’s mysterious past than he wants anyone to go. If she fails, she not only stands to lose a magical war, but she could also lose the man she loves."
Much Ado about Magic is the much anticipated (at least by me, because I really like these books; they're just too sweet and cute) fifth book in the Enchanted, Inc series.

Katie Chandler returns to New York to ask for her old job back, at Magic, Spells and Illusions (MSI). She is has a rare immunity to magic that is very valuable to magical folk since she can spot hidden clauses in contracts and see through glamours. Her former boss, Merlin (yes, THE Merlin) accepts her back promptly because the situation with their rival (and evil) company Spellworks is not over; they might have captured a minion but the real mastermind remains at large and is still creating havoc.

With magically fueled maladies and robberies spreading through New York, the magical community is scared; and it seems like they will put their faith with Spellworks. How will Merlin and his company solve this problem?

This book was, like the previous four, a quick and cute read. Swendson knows how to captivate her readers with her light writing style.

At the same time this book was a little darker. We finally get a glimpse of the bigger plan behind Spellworks, the company that has been the bane of our heroes since book one. We also get a lot of information about Owen and his past.

I'll admit some parts of the book seemed forced (as in, the events came out of nowhere and seemed a bit implausible), but I still liked this read.

Katie and Owen start having fights and I think there was more emotional turmoil in this book, more tension and consequently more character development.

The twist at the end was pretty unexpected.

Overall, a nice, cute read that will definitely appeal to fans of chick lit who also like a bit of paranormal action. The world building is not the most original and the plot devices were a little predictable but the author makes it works and manages to combine all the elements to form an interesting story.

I received a digital copy of Much Ado about Magic from NLA Digital Liaison Platform LLC through Netgalley. Thank you.
