Terrible: giving depth to thugs everywhere. You'll never look at Thug A from Action Movie 12495 the same way again! And that's a damn feat in my book.

Stacia Kane's characters are so human I actually want to meet them. They are so appealing I actually want to forgive Terrible for his crimes. Damn.

Wrong Ways Down is a novella from Terrible's (the unlikely male protagonist/hero of the Downside Ghosts series) point of view. Terrible is the "chief enforcer" for Bump, one of Downside's drug dealers. As such, he is expected to make sure all of Bump's operations run smoothly. However, when one of Bump's dealers is murdered and Bump's prostitutes are brutally attacked, it is up to Terrible to investigate. So he does it the way he knows best... with his fists.

This story takes place between books 1 and 2 of the series, so, as many readers have already remarked upon, there aren't many "aww moments" between Chess and Terrible. This isn't really about our drug addict of a heroine (erm... no pun intended or whatever); it's about Terrible. And that's fine.

I loved this story because I got to know more about Terrible. Not just how much he cares for Chess (although I must admit that part was too cute for words) but also what makes him tick, how he feels about what he does (and his feelings aren't pretty sometimes) and how he sees himself (as a dumb, ugly goon). We also get to see a bit of how Chess sees him and how that changes him. This interaction helps explain their mutual attraction.

As for the plot itself, it was pretty run of the mill. It served mostly to make the characters interact, which is a constant in Kane's books. Although she has constructed a pretty believable and interesting dystopian world, with solid supernatural elements, it isn't actually the world or even the stories/mysteries that make the series shine, in my humble opinion; it is the characters, that are so excellently written and developed that make me come back to these books again and again. I think did mention in my last review(s) that I was a bit frustrated with the lack of world development; Kane's world remains static (we still don't know much about Haunted Week, there are no factions that we know of, that question the Church's version of events, there are no alternate explanations, etc) and the characters are too absorbed by their little worlds to think about the bigger picture.

But that is a rant for another review. Suffice to say we got little to no world building/development in this short story, but we do find out more about Terrible, which was great to me.

In general, a great read. As compulsive and compelling as always!

Finding Magic takes place before book one (way before), Unholy Ghosts. Chess is 18 and still a student/ trainee in the Church. Due to her good grades she is offered a chance to train with members of a Black Squad. She is soon involved in an investigation about some murders possibly committed by ghosts.

This novella was a quick read. It's interesting mostly because it explores Chess's early years in the Church. We are told a bit more about her childhood, about how she views the world and even the beginnings (somewhat) of her addiction. We also learn how she became a Debunker and met Elder Griffin.

So basically, this is a good book (or novella) to start with if you're interested in reading this series.

Em Foco: série Downside Ghosts

Hoje vou falar um pouco de uma das séries de fantasia urbana que mais me impressionou nos últimos tempos.

A série Downside Ghosts, da autoria de Stacia Kane, tem como protagonista Chess Putnam. Chess é uma protagonista invulgar que vive num futuro próximo invulgar.

Em 1997, um acontecimento à escala mundial mudou radicalmente o futuro da Humanidade: no presente do livro chamam-lhe "Haunted Week" (Semana Assombrada ou Assombrosa). Nessa semana os mortos ergueram-se das suas sepulturas, exércitos de fantasmas irados que pegaram em tudo o que pudesse constituir uma arma e desataram a matar pessoas. A Igreja [da Verdade] (que, pelo que nos é dito, era, até ao momento uma seita, provavelmente constituída por bruxas e feiticeiros) veio em defesa da Humanidade, combatendo os fantasmas e prendendo-os numa caverna gigante com feitiços para os acalmar. A essa caverna chamou-se a "Cidade da Eternidade".

Alguns anos mais tarde (pelo menos 20, não se sabe bem quantos), a Igreja governa o mundo. Todas as outras religiões são proibidas, uma vez que se provou que eram falsas, quando os fantasmas apareceram. A Igreja ensina que apenas os Factos e a Verdade importam.

Chess é uma bruxa afiliada à Igreja cujo trabalho é investigar assombrações (assim mais ou menos como os Ghost Busters). Se a assombração for verdadeira, a Igreja (através de Chess), tem como dever 'banir' o fantasma para a Cidade da Eternidade e pagar uma compensação ao lesado. Se a assombração for falsa, quem tiver pedido os serviços da Igreja irá preso. É que caçar fantasmas não é isento de riscos uma vez que estes são por norma (99,9% como refere Chess) violentos.

Chess vive no pior lado da cidade, o Downside, um local governado por dois gangues rivais. É também viciada em drogas. Leva uma vida dupla, pois se descobrissem o seu vício não poderia continuar a trabalhar para a Igreja. A sua vida complica-se quando o seu vendedor de drogas lhe pede (ou melhor, a força) para trabalhar também para ele. Chess vê-se obrigada a aceitar pois não pode deixar que a Igreja descubra a realidade da sua vida.

Esta é a premissa base da série. Chess é uma personagem complicada que teve uma infância horrorosa, tendo sido abusada física e psicologicamente nas maioria das casas de acolhimento onde foi colocada. Só quando foi testada pela Igreja e se descobriu que tinha poderes mágicos é que se libertou. Assim, Chess tem de ser quase duas pessoas diferentes; depende de drogas (nas quais foi viciada por um ou mais dos pais adoptivos) mas tem de esconder esse facto da Igreja que não tolera tais vícios. E Chess quer continuar na Igreja, porque na sua mente, foi a Igreja que a salvou, quando a retirou do "sistema" para ser educada nas artes de bruxa e caçadora de fantasmas.

Downside Ghosts é uma série de fantasia urbana bem mais sombria e violenta do que o normal. Para além do apelativo e bem estruturado mundo distópico, Kane apresenta-nos uma personagem profundamente magoada física e psicologicamente, que tem de se obrigar a viver uma vida que no fundo, não quer assim muito viver. Chess é uma personagem perturbante, pelos seus problemas, pela sua profunda falta de auto-estima e pela escuridão que a rodeia, devido aos seus sentimentos negativos e muitas vezes, de auto-comiseração. A autora não está com meias medidas; Chess não é "pseudo-torturada" como tantas heroínas de fantasia urbana que por aí andam, sofreu muito e o leitor não é poupado às descrições (em nada gráficas, no entanto), daquilo que lhe aconteceu. Esta protagonista é muito mais humana, real e consequentemente falível do que muitas outras dentro do género.

Até ao livro 5 (Chasing Magic), a autora focou-se mais no desenvolvimento de Chess e do conjunto de personagens com quem interage (basicamente criminosos residentes em Downside) do que nas origens (A "Semana Assombrada") do mundo em que as personagens se movem. Mesmo assim esta é uma óptima série, diferente, sombria e completamente viciante. Stacia Kane tem uma maravilhosa atenção ao detalhe e cria um mundo sólido e interessante, do qual é muito difícil fugir.

Esta apresentação não estaria completa sem se falar um bocado do Terrible. Que é o protagonista e interesse romântico da heroína. Nunca vi uma relação tão bem construída e credível neste tipo de livros (fantasia urbana). O Terrible (Terrível) é um protagonista diferente (lá está), e ao princípio é um bocado estranho pensarmos nele como interesse romântico (bem, ele é um dos 'vilões' por assim dizer), mas não tarda muito estamos a torcer por ele! E quando damos por ela estamos com os olhinhos a brilhar quando pensamos no Terrível! xD

Word! Altamente recomendada, esta série! Se uma autora consegue fazer-me sentir tantas emoções (como choque, nojo, tristeza e coisas assim) de uma só vez, então para mim vale a pena. :)
